with you on the golf...a bit above my price range which is around the 9,000 mark but if there is a better alternative then I am all ears...I think the styling is the winner for me though, just love the punto looks.
@timbo...how was is 0-60....did you time it? did it zip off pretty quick even if it didn't feel like it?

The book 0-60 is 7.9 from evo or 8.7 (must've been wet) from Autocar.
If you give it the full berries from a standing start you can feel yourself getting forced back in the seat.
They've also got good traction from a standing start, plus traction control.
Obviously if you really want to you CAN light up the front tyres but it needs a real effort or worn tyres/wet road.

As I said before I would really love another one because it's got the perfect power and feel for a backroad thrash. Sometimes the coupe I've got is just too fast (and the brakes are ****), although it's excellent for overtaking a line of cars on the A9 8)

The HGT is also pretty quick on the motorway. If you get held up down to, say, 70mph then the traffic clears you can floor it in 5th and it takes off quickly up to 110 or 115 (only in Germany of course).

If you've got £9k to spend you should also look at the Clio 172 or 182, Lupo GTI, Corsa whatever it's called, and I suppose, the 206 GTI although I would never buy the Pug because the driving position is awful.
You may also be able to get a current shape Fiesta ST or Zetec for that kind of money.

After reading all that I gotta agree that the HGT sounds a much better option - ples you dont have the worry that your brand new mk3 is going to be recalled by the fiat monkeys on multiple occasions to replace parts etc....

But if your lookin for a brand new car with warranty then i guess thats better for you.

Yup.

Might be worth trying on-line places like Jam Jar and Drive The Deal to see what their prices are like for new HGTs. Might be pretty close to £9k.

Also remember that the HGT is Grp 15 insurance

yeah my insurance will jump from £220 to £750ish which is with 5 year ncb and am 26...still a sore one lol
Am thinking HGT is the way to go, arnold clark are doing delivery mileage 05 plates for 8.5k and that should go down to make way for the mk3 so looks a likely prospect.
Thanks Timbo for the detailed reply, nice to get a real idea of the car rather than the official facts and figures!
