Some mindless hooligans went down the road last night at 1am trying to rip car mirrors off. Unfortunately they managed to rip the passenger one off my Stilo, before I chased them down the road.

It's been ripped clean off, with the 3 screws left on the car, and the mirror just attached by the electrics cable.

I've had a look at this thread, so can see how to get to the screws behind the speaker panel:

But I'm guessing where-ever the screws screw into on my mirror has been damaged.

Looking at eper, that part is all one bit, and is the main bit of the mirror assembly:

Anyone had this problem before and somehow fixed it without buying a replacement mirror?

Gonna have a look at the damage now and see what I can do, so any pointers appreciated.

Cheers,
EF

Is it possible to detach the electric cable without removing the door fascia?

I think I can repair the screw holes and metal guides with epoxy, so ideally need to take the mirror off so the epoxy can dry inside. And the gf needs to get to work in the car.

Cant figure out how to prise the mirror cover off to see if the cable detaches there.

Cheers,
EF

Thanks Ratty,

Ended up removing the glass, following the guide on here, had flat head screwdriver behind the plastic, but still managed to break the glass

If anyone else needs to get the cables out this way, then I should point out that there is a massive dollop of glue in the hole of the mirror housing which the cables run through, and you'll need to prise this glue out first. This also involves taking the cover off, which is easier once you remove the mirror glass. You'll also need to remove the mirror motor cables from the plastic connector using a small philips screwdriver, since the connector wont fit through the housing hole.

This is not a job to do when it starts snowing! Am just defrosting now.

Doh. Sorry mate. it may now be better to buy a complete assembly. not too sure what you can do in the meantime and take the door card off if that is what you need to do the get to the connector.

I managed to disconnect the cables using the procedure I described. Took a while to get the glue blob dislodged. Esp with frozen fingers.

So managed to get mirror off, and gf could use the car to go to work. Taped a placcy bag over the holes.

Will epoxy the metal screw guides in, and see if that works. Then just leaves me to ebay a replacement heated mirror.

Thanks for the help,
EF

PS. Is there a special knack to prising the housing cover off? Even with the mirror glass off and the clips showing, it was hard to get it off.

there are 2 types of mirror glass available. one has the black plastic cradle stuck on the back and is about £17 and the other has the plastic cradle seperate and you clip it on then stick the glass to it and is about £8. The only problem with this is that when you stick it on it can drop and be too low. There are complete heated mirrors on ebay for about £25.

I have one of the £7 ones and one of the £17 ones on the other mirror. The £17 one heats up a lot quicker than the other one. Make you you are explicitly clear on the side you want.

Yeah I noticed that some come without the back cradle. I'm thinking though that I should be able to re-use the original cradle.

Was even thinking I could re-use the heater part, but it looks quite hard the get the old glass off, and probably not worth the bother. Only few quid more for the one with a heater.

I also have to be honest, and until now I didnt even know my mirrors had heating. Been winding down the windows to clear them with a cloth

Gf is not back until very late tonight, so will try and refit epoxied mirror housing tomorrow, and check it is all ok. Just in case I need to order the whole housing anyway. But the repair seems ok, as the screw guides were quite a struggle to get back in, so with the epoxy hopefully they'll hold ok.

Will use the cracked mirror until I'm sure the housing repair is 100%.

So wheres the best place to get replacement heated mirror glass for the stilo, Anybody got any links please.

Thanks.

Thanks Ratty, much appreciated, but I ordered one from ebay already.

With clip, as my clip was messed up anyway. I think it is why the mirror broke when I unclipped it.

I actually realise why I never noticed the mirrors were heated, as neither side seems to heat up. I'll see if the new one works when I receive it.

Good news is my epoxy repair seems to have been ok, it's not fallen off for over a week now :)

Cheers,
Menno
