Technical Maddening Missfire! [coil?]

Well, I finally got to do the votage checks!
Results:

Across Battery at tickover = 14.35v
Bat + to engine block = 14.35v
As above with rear heater & lights = 14.19v
Bat - to engine block = 0.01v
Bat + to Alternator output = 0.02v

Which all seemed pretty good. The only thing I could see was a rise in voltage between Battery + and Alternator output when the engine kicked on tickover (flashed up to 21volts).
With this in mind, I stripped and cleaned the alternator terminal and all the positive battery terminals and also sprayed them with contact cleaner for good measure. Road tested... Still missfiring..

So, next plan of attack, bearing in mind the thread that Argonought posted, was to fit the new plug top coil to each cylinder in turn and road test to see if the fault had changed.

I fitted the coil to no 1 first and tested; no change. Fitted the coil removed from number 1 to number 2 and tested; no change. Number 3; no change. Number 4; Fault gone! No 'kick' on idal, no missfire when driving!

I have given the car a good long road test this afternoon, and it drives faultlessly! So we have done it!!!!!!!!!

So many thanks to Deckchair5 for your test suggestions, and many thanks to Argonought for your link to the thread and your input!

Tenwierdufos, I hope your injector change cures the problem (do keep us informed), but if it doesn't, you know what to try next!

Off to order another coil as a spare now! (y)

Many Thanks
Phil

Thats a **** idea....why cant we pay via Direct Debit...

Jos, you can buy car tax stamps from the post office in £5 demoniations. Buy a few each month and have your tax ready when it comes round. Better than just saving the money as once you've bought the stamps you can't dip into it when your skint like a savings acount.

Lectrcian, Well done for getting it sorted, typical that it was number 4 and not number 1, LOL but that's always seems to be the way when testing stuff.

Great result Phil (y)

This is the key reason for keeping threads together as it provides invaluable info for anyone searching with the same symptoms :)

Shame the coil hasnt completely cleaned mine up, ive allready changed 2 so unless its another one thats gone dont have another to test with though.

Yeah, im fairly frustrated right now, got a call from the suppliers of my new inlet manifold gasket to say it hasnt turned up and wont till tuesday (which is a day after the day i can have the garage, so i cant do it till a week on monday now!!!!

They only orderd the part yesterday even though i went in on tuesday apparently.....

Shame i cant do the same thing as i did with my little rc car when the exhaust got knocked off, i just made one out of a bit of cardboard and it runs like a charm :slayer:

It might be worth getting another coil, as your injector change looks like it might be delayed. I found them for around £25 on Ebay. You could try it on the other two cylinders and see if it makes any difference. If it doesn't, at least you will have a spare (as they seem to fail on a regular basis if you read some of the other threads).

Good luck with the injector change anyway!

Yo dude i had same problem with my 1.6 it kept missfireing over and over. Took it to the garage they said it's the coilpacks ok so i had them changed 1 day later the problem is back wasn't happy, took it back again it wasn't the coilpacks it was the ECU not good serious money. The ECU sits on the engine so it gets very hot and fails i had to replace my ECU was lucky found one on ebay for 150quid most places charge 400+ hope you get the problem fixed.(y)

haha, in that case, id really prefer it to be a coil than the ECU for the engine :bang:

anyway, shall wait to see whatc omes of this injector change, if it make no difference and the injectors in my car go through our tester fine, then i shall sell them on to recoup some of the cost.

Glad to hear the gaskets in at last. When are you planning to do the job now?

Mine is still driving like a dream (runs around the room, waving hands in the air and shouting YAHOOOO!).

Do let us know how you get on. You could even take some photos as you do the job and produce a guide for the forum!

Good Luck! (y)

I really do hope it sorts it out as its very frustrating.

Hopefully monday i will be doing it but mabye not now (the original idea was to use the workshop on monday and then in the event of it taking too long it would be allright to leave there overnight and continue on tues, but have since discoverd that its now not open on tues, so will have to see what they say...)

either way, its all here and waiting to go. and as long as i have the time to take some decent pics while working on it, i shall have a good go at making a guide, good idea
:D

Hmm, someone might have just taken all the annoying stuff off the car to get the fuel rail today only to slip once and round off one of the two torx screws that holds the fuel rail on....

OOOPS! :(

These jobs are rarely straightforward. Last time I had a rounded off Torx, I managed to hammer a 1/2" drive allen key into it and get it out (the secret is to find the right size allen key - mine was an imperial one...)

Good luck with it any way!

heh yeah, is a right pain, not enough room to get a hammer in, or even the torx bit in without a flexi joint, is going to be a right pain to sort.

well, to be honest i hope it is, have just had to pay my tax so no spare money for it this month, but when i can next afford one i will buy another to test with, will be alot easier a next step than trying to remove those screws.

I suppose at the end of the day if its not helping i still have a spare coil lol.
