Hi just joint been using since my son bought his first car (1.2 8v sport) he has now lost his only key , I have been looking at ECU sets on e-bay can any one tell me if a MK2 will fit on a MK2/2B as not a mechanic , but the price Fiat want for a new key has made me look at alternitives

Hi,

Mk2'a' ecu kit on mk2b or vice versa will be miss/match,

only thing ican sugest is ring locksmith, some will use a profile to cut a key
to gain access if needed then code key inside vehicle,

if your local to manchester..then look for company named KEYFAX based in Ashton-u-lyne.,
if down south there is companys on this forum that might be able to help there,

using a locksmith will work out alot cheaper than mainagents.

if you want specific help then you need to give specific details of your sons car so guidance can be given

if you have the fiat code i will eat my hat as every pdi inspection sheet ive ever seen specifically uncrosses the box where customer would have been given this at delivery of their new car
vw then jumped on this bandwagon citing if keycode left in car then car could be stolen and we all know what a joke that is

I think s&b thought that Oldhammer meant that the keycode is in the vehicle, but I think Oldhammer meant code the key once you are inside the vehicle.
When I had this problem last year I got an auto locksmith guy to clone the one remaining key and all was well until I had to disconnect the battery to replace it with a new one. After that the car became immobilised and requested the key code everytime I attempted to start the car. s&b called it correctly at the time and told me that the locksmith had corrupted the security system. I had 2 choices - either go to Fiat for the key code and a new keys, body computer ecu etc, or buy a lock set plus ecu's (engine and body) from a scrappy and fit them.
I chose the latter.
I mention this as a cautionary tale as it drove me and everybody who was kind enough to offer advice round the bend at the time.
Be very careful about having a cloned key made.

so so so glad I read this just now! I was thinking of having mine cloned as I only have 1 and thought it would be good to have a spare! think i will just look after this key ;) (y)

Well I don't want to tar all auto locksmiths with the same brush (as there may be ones reading this who will guarantee your job), but in my case it was a lesson learned. It was my son who lost the key, so I made him responsible for replacing it, so he chose the cheapest route possible, which cost him about £80. If I had done it legitimately with Fiat I think it would have cost about £200 through Fiat. As it was it cost me £125 plus the time it took me to change all the locks and the ecu and body computer.

hi pooroldcodger what i was saying was ive never ever seen a codecard in any service pack ever and if i ever do i will eat my hat
i took on board what problems you had with your key because in this game knowledge is king]
you wont believe me (ok you will :D) but i have a punto here with only one key (it looks like a siciento key ie its a cloned key) and ive gone to extreme lengths NOT to remove the battery whilst it had been worked on and one of the problems was severe

I actually asked my local FIAT / Alfa specialist..
they said IF I supplied a VIRGIN key, they will code it in using Examiner for £20 ( YES - I have the CODE) : - },

It would be useful to hear from anybody who has had a Punto Mk2 / 2b key cloned, and been able to disconnect the battery and have everything still work as normal afterwards. Then we know if it can be done successfully or should we all just steer well clear (or don't lose a key of course!).

I'dont think a propper locksmith will just clone -a key will they'?

from what iwas told is..they make up the key..then go in the car and De-lete anymissing keys and start a fresh.

iwouid avoid any of these shoe cobbler's /yale shed key cutting places that claim they can cut & code akey.
