General Leather steering wheel destroyed!

could it be that you have used a cleaner on it that you havent wiped away properly? and this has reacted with the sunlight?

:yeahthat:

also they have changed the design. later models are smooth leather like mine:

Normally the main reason for this happening is a lack of moisture in the leather itself heat from the sun dries the wheel out and then makes it crack/bubble etc to stop it from doing this you should go out and buy a leather moisturizer

Beany has been doing that 6 monthly.

I havent, just wiped it over with a damp micro-fibre cloth now & again and not a problem with mine. Then again I dont grip the wheel like my life depends on it either... I still go for a crap batch of leather...

hmm strange, i think its a dud then it may be because of mass production the odd few didnt turn out how it should.

that would be a FAIL im afraid.

Sporting models have the peppered design(y)

you mean perforated leather. well there is your answer as perforated leather is generally weaker unless they used a stronger hide which is commonly pigs leather (no im not bull ****ting)

and saying that would suggest mine is from the eleganza rather than te sporting.

seriously though look on ebay, get it retrimmed, be prepared to pay fiats mad prices or put up and shut up. only options really.

Just to clear this up...

The Grande Punto Sportings (Series 1 & 2) has the leather with holes in around the side parts.

Cheaper models have a 'leather' steering wheel, but the 'smooth' cheaper looking leather all the way around. (y)

Mine's never done this on my old blue sporting on my current red sporting.

However, I think I might moisturize my leather (hahaha )

i just can't belive that some one in greece hasn't had a problem but someone in scotland has!!! clearly a bad batch, i'd say if you were in 2 year warranty still it should certianly be covered, you could even get them to look at it next to another one the same age they might have there and prove it shouldn't have happened

the preforated leather is actually embossed into it.

wich would weaken it. leather is an odd thing and can get weakened really easily if you know how. embossing leather is like scoring meat before you cook it. effectively weakening the outside layer. so would potentially make the sporting wheels more susceptable to this kind of damage. so whilst at the moment it appears a bad batch (would need numbers really to confirm it) it could simply be because of them patterning/embossing the leather and therefore weakening it. meanuing that potentially all sporting wheels have this happen over time

I had similar problem on steering wheel at right hand position only.
Reported just before end of 2 year manufacturer warranty and (to my surprise) they fitted a new steering wheel under warranty!

now theres an idea .....

How many of you with problems have actually treated their leather wheels? (jsut be aware most car derived leather care stuff isn't all its cracked up to be and is a short term fix..

Even though the hide is tanned it still needs some TLC every once in a while (especially with the amount of "hammer" the steering wheel gets...
