what do people mean when they say upgraded bearings. How is one better than another.
6204 refers to the dimensions of the bearing

I fitted SKF 6204 C3, it was £3
They are available with both, one, or no sides sealed
I went with open, no seals, as I reasoned it's supposed to get fed with oil for lubrication

I've been wondering whether the roller bearing type would be an upgrade

I've read some suggestions on this site that is the case due to failures of the ball bearing cages

For example, some Puntos with the C514.5 gearbox got roller bearings

I think it is what I would do

They do different jobs, so not strictly a upgrade

Angular contact bearing are for both radial and axial load

Roller bearings are for mainly radial loads and heavy impacts

Most of the bearing in the gearbox are sealed, standard metal cages,.fiat chose to move away from this for the input bearing, GRP cages have better damping properties, smoother and less prone start vibrations

If the were failing due to radial load I am sure fiat would have changed them to a cheaper roller bearings in the last 50 years, the are used in other places and on different gearboxes

Not helped by the handbook specifying only checking gearbox oil level every 80k km, filled for life

Which is clearly nonsense

End result is nobody ever checks the level

Mine was low on transmission oil when I got it

Probably then bearing is starved of oil, overheats and the plastic cage disintegrates

Correct

Leaking diff seal is fairly common

There probably a connection

Just by the time is rattling it's just too late

Looks like a ribe bolt

I have never seen them on the clutches I have changed

Are you sure it's not post 2012
You made me think about what's the difference MK3 or (2012+). You are correct to question me, as I have no idea of the difference. The model type is "312PXA1AP0B" FIAT PANDA III 1.2 (69hp) If I have it wrong hopefully the gearbox is the same on both cars, so that I'm not wasting people time. I also have a Ribe Bit Socket set on order, so I have the correct tools next time.

I now have two Pandas, You might say I've a spare while I fix the first one. When I drove it home, it also made an odd noise and I found it needed another 500mil oil in it's gear box. So not something they checked when it was serviced in January. Unfortunately I've had bad luck with garage mechanics lying to me about work they have done. I guess experience tells them, that no one will ever get under their car to check. But I do!

Punto g/box oil can be checked and topped up from above, on level ground.

The lads Punto g/b oil gets checked ever 3 mouths as a precaution.

Where is the i.d. plate/numbers on the gearbox please ?

5 speed, or a good picture would help please....🤓

Yes, it's confusing.
They are known as generation 1-3
But Mk1-4 (because Mk1 & Mk2 are the same original shape Panda)

Mk1 1980 (generation 1)
Mk2 1986 (generation 1)
Mk3 2003 (generation 2)
Mk4 2012 (generation 3)

Yours is Mk4 2012+
Generation 3

I was going to add that to avoid confusion many of us refer to them by type number...
...but I'm not sure if that really helps 😂
Gen 1 Mk1 Type 141 / Mk2 Type 141a
Gen 2 Mk3 Type 169

But then
Gen 3 Mk4 was Type 312 then changed to 319 because 312 was also the new 500 😭😂🫤

They were just making it up as they went along

Anyway has that helped? I think I've just confused myself

Makes no difference to me for.most things

But there are subtle differences

Gear sector mechanism on the 4x4 is different, for example

The DNA of the box's is the same

Some times a fault is specific to model where posting in the correct section gets you the solution faster
