Plenty of penetrating fluid and a little heat usually does the job always use the correct lambda sensor socket for the job..never be tempted to use anything else..what engine is it..:)
 
1.6. the local fiat workshop tried the penetration oil thing, but, wait for it, tried to take it out with a modified ring spanner. Nearly had a heart attack when I saw it.
 
1.6 is a pig of a manifold to get out being at the back of the engine..and not an easy place to get at a lambda either..if it had been a 1.2 or 1.4 I would have suggested take the mani off the car cos they are at the front of the engine..modified ring spanner to get a lambda out on a 1.6 Jesus H Christ..:cry:

Local Fiat idiots (sorry franchise) eventually managed to find a replacement Lambda sensor from a franchise in Johannesburg. Waited 5 days for it!!! Happy, happy car will be purring along shortly. Drove all the way from Durban to Umhlanga for the replacement, got there Fiat fit the new sensor, still all smiles.

Got back in Westville, guess what, yellow light came on, engine failure, WTF!!!! Just spent R2, 100.00 on a service, then another R1, 200.00 on the Lambda sensor, and I am now worse off than before the %&6% service, R3, 500.00 out of pocket, AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!

By the way PNL, it took them about 1 minute to get the sensor out, with the correct tool this time!!
 
It had a slight misfire, before the replacement, with the power coming in surges if you accelerate. Now it is worst.

Anyway, they have now taken the fault code to the TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT of Fiat, according to them the car needs to be put tru a 28 step testing program. Will be done next week Tuesday. They are hopeful to pick up the problem then. I am not holding my breath.
 
Weeks later and the Stilo with Fiat for over 5 days, the light is still on.

Can somebody please advise on it: The Lambda sensor was replaced (because the clever computer said so) by Fiat, the light came back on, then they reset the total engine management program, the light came back, then they ran a complete diagnostic program on the total car (???) and according to the results, the timing belt was out by one tooth (??), that rectified, the light came back like a nightmare.

Now I drive a car that is so down on power that I have to gear down just to get to the top of a hill. Sucking fuel at a rate that will bankrupt me soon, and none the wiser on how to fix the problem.

Please help!!

I have the same problem. I reset the lambda error and 2 month later it show again. Do I need to change lambda och is it other problem? I will check the voltage om lambda first. Brown and black cable.

Hi,

Luckily my problem was sorted out by the local Fiat garage. The first sensor (just behind the manifold) was replaced as the first replacement was faulty. That is why the problem kept on coming back. Anyway the car seems to be fine now. As far as I know there are actually 2 lambda sensors in the car. Can be that it is the other one that is faulty on your car. Best is to check both of them out. Just be careful when you remove them especially the front one. They tend to be a bastard to get out.

Hi, I have disconnected the first lambda and white-white is around 8 ohm. Black and brown, these I cant messure. What is the resistan on these wires? The second lamba has the same vaule.

Dont check a lambda sensor by trying to measure its resistance. The sensor creates a voltage dependent on the oxygen present so it doesn't like having voltages from multimeters put into it

Best to check its voltage output whilst it is in use. It should oscillate between 0.15 to 0.85v on the black signal wire every sec at tickover

OK, the first Lambda shows 0.7-.08 volt. I cleaned the intake and the engine has idle at 800 turne/minute. I will test the second Lambda tonight. How do I test the heater in Lambda?

How do I test the heater in Lambda?
See if it has continuity (ie not open circuit) and a low resistance (you've already done that) . Then check if there is 12v and earth being supplied to it with engine on

White - white is the heater element which is a low resistance of around 10ohms.It doesnt matter which way around it is connected but the supply wire will have 12v and the other is connected to earth

What fault code are you getting?

Fault code P0420 = Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
 
Ok P0420 doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your O2 sensors. It means that it has spotted that your post cat O2 sensor output trace is following your pre cat O2 sensor so closely on occasions that it seems your cat isn't doing as much as it should
