I have a 2006 Panda Multijet with 114K miles. The car has just had a service and MOT but has developed a rather alarming knocking noise, it doesn't occur on start up or at speed but is very discernible when decelerating from 40-30mph and when the car is under light load.

I am struggling to tell exactly where it is originating from, certainly from the front of the car and probably on the drivers side. I have had a look underneath, checked as much as possible for wear, tightness or fouling but nothing has come to light. My local garage can't see it until next week and I am reluctant to drive it in the mean time just in case I am exacerbating the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for the various suggestions. The car is not the 4x4 and the noise is a very loud and continuous knocking when the car decelerates or is under light engine load.

It is frustrating because I half expect to look underneath the car and see something obvious but so far to no avail. I will jack the car up and have another look today.

Right that Good information

The First suggestion. A3jeroen is a Good one

For the CV the speed of the knocking would be affected by road speed and load only

Changing gear will make no difference to the speed of the knocking

Engine and gearbox would be affected by gear selection and engine revs

4x4 could be the drive shaft centre bearing. But also check the engine sway mount (dog bone). Exhaust is easier - get underneath and shake it about. The rubber hangers have a nylon strap that stops them stretching too much. The nylon eventually falls off making the rubbers too flexible.

I've just had this similar issue fixed on my 2006 Eleganza. Car used to grind when turning and steady knock when taking my foot of the throttle or gently pressing on the pedal.

Turns out it was the top mounts/shocks had come to the end of their lives.
