apparently so Android OS users are having issues with "viruses".. but I guess having a Anti Virus program on it will solve any problems there...

My daughter just told me jealous Black Berry users started that rumor because they all brought the worst phones on the market to get free messaging, but now thanks to Kik, we can all have it on better phones.

I take the view of, if my Phones anti virus doesnt pick anything up then its fine (and its using Kaspersky)
But as for them saying its not a virus, just because they say that there own program isnt a virus doesnt make you believe them....
I've an iPhone and use iChat to other users or ping chat between other smart phones
I have an iPhone and find that when im wanting to talk to others outside of iMessage, ie, those who dont own an iPhone... I use my text allowance...
So many mobile phone deals include about a squillion free texts per month these, it hardly seems worth installing it. I think the people who created this kik thingy may be a couple of years too late

I think its perfect for kids because regardless of what phone they have, they can now keep in touch with each other without running up huge bills for their parents.
My eldest lad is only 4 years old but I've just installed it on an old phone of mine and hes doing his best to send messages to myself and his older sister.
I'm finding all this Virus/Hacker scaremongering thing quite amusing, I can't believe how naive some people are ..

Is BBM not the same?
With me being on iOS5 now I iMessage my iPhone-owning friends with that. However for those without an iPhone I just use WhatsApp, judging by this kik thing it's a very similar piece of software. I also have a large amount of texts in my plan but I use WhatsApp to talk to my parents & friends who live abroad, I'm not paying anything for it it's just using my data allowance (also large), which is much better than adding about 15p a text to talk to someone overseas..

if done properly - surly you can use Wifi instead?

Nah - BBM is free. Messages don't count towards your plan (if you even have one).
That's why it go so popular
I like WhatsApp due to the fact it just uses mobile numbers, no need to try and remember usernames as well

When i worked at O2 we had to remind customers who bought a blackberry that even though the messages didn't come of the text allowance they would need the BB data plan because signing on to the messanger means you have to go online either with wifi or 3G. and at that time you had to pay for the privilege of using wifi

So you need internet access via your mobile phone network or WiFi to use BBM?
If it goes via the internet and uses the network there must be a cost of some sort, surely the data sent and received isn't free?
yeah that about sums it up thats what we were told to tell customers.
If you send and receive data over your own WiFi network, it's included in your own broadband charges so is 'free', any other WiFi network will have it's own way of working - like McD's for example it's free but you do have to register to use it (probably so that they can spam you with emails). BBM requires Blackberry Internet Services to work, which - last time I checked - cost £5/month with Vodafone.

Just asked my mates son, he's 14 and has a BB phone.
Most networks charge cost £5/month for the data connection to allow the BBM service to work.

You need to have a BIS connection - but the BBMs dont cost anything to send/receive. (At least that is how it is out here)
