Hi, I have a Stilo 1.9 JTD with an intermittent engine fault. Occasionally the engine appears to lose power no matter how hard the accelerator is pressed and produces a large amount of exhaust fumes, speed is barely crawling along. Then the fault disappears and the revs roar back. The garage changed out the air flow sensor and this appeared to fix the problem and handling was great - for about a week. Has anyone had anything similar or know what the problem could be?

i would try cleaning the EGR valve, this usually has these symptoms, have a search for it there are plenty threads detailing it and also a guide in on how to do it in the grande punto guides, it is the same setup so dont worry.

My Stilo did this too and it was coils that were gone. Have had all 4 done now and it did it again - this time it was the throttle body. I would check both of these things.

I presume you have a 1.6 The OP has a JTD so does not have coils and the throttle body is not as much as a problem as it's not a throttle body as such it acts in a different way on a diesel than it does on a petrol

Whoops, sorry  I'll not try and answer any more technical questions... Lol.

i had a similar problem was going along fine then no power crawled along and smoke.
got some carb cleaner from halfords and gave it a good cleaning and did the throttle body as well.
it was suprisingly clean but the egr was gunked up.
runs fine now....
.apart from another problem i have but thats another thread............
