Basicly on the back of the car, near the pipe that sticks out, you have the huge heavy backbox.

That fell off.

Its honestly not that loud, probibly 50% quieter than some of these kids who go around with dustbins strapped to there exausts. When cruising its only marginally louder.

What im worried about is because the exaust is obviously no longer directed outside from my bumper with the hot gasses cause damage or worse a fire?

Got a quote for £99 because aparently the Punto Sporting doesnt sell backbox's seperately and you need to buy the whole thing. Main problem is I don't have £99.

Whoops, sorry about the post in this area - Can it be moved? I thought it was in the Punto section but aparently not.

the backbox isnt important. i've had a car without one for months, and the hot gases never burnt anything, but the car did stink of fumes because the exhaust gases collect under the car unless you keep moving. so as long as you dont mind headaches and dizzyness (maybe you like that sort of thing?) i wouldnt worry about it for now.

a cheap alternative is a scrapyard backbox. expect to pay £10 for a good condition one if you remove it yourself.

Yup, it sounds more like the rear back box has fallen off rather than the CAT. The CAT is normally positioned as near to the engine as possible to allow it to get hotter quicker.

A car will run without a cat, but don't some of them have a Lamda sensor which then sends a message to the ECU that something is wrong and forces it into 'limp' mode?

As for the backbox, the car will sound nice and rorty without it :)devil:) but you do run the risk of getting pulled by the Police and also being a pain to your neighbours.

And if you can fit it yourself, try and find a motor factors that sell mainly to the trade. Offer to pay for the exhaust in cash and they will often let you have it at trade price (y)

Good old English mot garages, you must be able to get some poor cars through them:eek: . If a car was fitted with a cat from the factory from 1992 on, then by legislation it MUST have it fitted for mot. Automatic failure overhere. Most of the guys here take them off and fit a straight pipe (as long as it's behind the lambda sensor), then just screw it back on come mot time.
Your back box missing won't set fire to anything unless you have A LOT of underseal on the car which will eventually melt and could ignite but that's an extreme.
Oh and for all the stuff from a cat to come out the end of an exhaust something very very wierd must have happened as it has to travel (normally) from around the front passenger seat, along the pipe, over the bend at the rear axle and through the back box to get out.

When an exhaust splits near the cat, the pipe between the cat and resonator/front silencer, it's PAINFUL (rather loud) to accelerate not to mention if you've not got a turbo you'll lose almost all torque. I speak from experience as mine went there on the way to work, I'm just glad my boss was away that day, don't think he've taken too kindly to me and one of the engineers spending the morning making me a new exhaust :D

Mostly the newer cars have a 'closed loop' lambda system with sensor after the cat. I think upto Brava age they have the lambda before the cat.

Later Bravas have lambda sensor after catalyst, remember all the 'post cat lambda sensor' does is monitor efficency of the cat(EOBD)

I'm wondering if there are power gains to be gained here??

The back box must waste a fraction of power from the engine (I presume they are the baffle types like on aircraft) - would you gain any useful amounts of power if you just clamped on some pipework onto the back of the breakage / cat and secured it to the original mountings?

I realise there are noise issues, however if you cut the end piping at 45 degrees, of in a chevron type shape it will quiet it down.... a little :D

Personally, I think the baffles type silencer is very wasteful, it mechanically has to be. You could probably gain power by changine to a glass pack / fibrous silencer as it doesnt directly impede gasflow.

As for the cat...if you can legally, remove it as it represents a huge impedence to airflow, else look at putting a 10-15 degree venturi on the inlet and outlet as it reduces the pressure gradient across it, which is a good thing ;)
