My previuos HGT was hit by another driver and I claimed on their insurence.Didnt hear anything for a couple of weeks so phoned them up to be told a cheque was in the post for two grand.Their engineer valued it at £2500 and they where holding back £350 which they reckoned I could get for salvage(I have to do the footwork), and they were keeping the other £150 in case I recieved more????? Give them **** on the phone and two days later got two cheques, £2000 with letter stating full and final settlement and one for £150.Also told on phone that if I didnt get the full £350 salvage,send them the receipt and they would give me the difference! Question is,as its still mine is it a write-off in the eyes of the law or can I fix it to sell on? Thanx for any advice but also beware:if I hadnt phoned up and bitched they would only have payed out the £2000 and I'd be none the wiser!!!

It will only be an A or B, if it was a C or D it would have been taken to a salvage yard immediately. I would imagine this is an A and they have given you a cash in leiu payment rather than repairing.

Asd far as i know any car can be rebuilt and sold on legally but the car would need a inspection called an svla (i think) and the car would carry a Q plate, as if it was a kit car! this is only if it in a high catergory... in a low catergory it will still need an inspection but might retain you reg!

Depends on the damage but you will be able to get it on the road again! depends how much damage there is and how handy you are at fixing it! if you need to pay a bodyshop to do it all then forget it they will charge you a fortune! i know, i work at one!

When is an Insurance Damage 'Write Off' not written off?

VCAR was the old name for an Insurance Damage Write-off.

A 'write off' is a colloquial term for a vehicle which has been declared a total loss by an insurer, either following accident damage or theft. There are some 450,000 accident-related write-offs every year and another 150,000 insurance thefts, many of which are subsequently recovered damaged and re-classified. Many write-offs are legitimately allowed back on the roads following a repair; the safest ones to buy are those which have passed an independent vehicle inspection, such as those on HPI's Condition Inspected register. However, almost half of all write-offs are so badly damaged that qualified insurance inspectors determine that they should never go back on the road. To assist the industry and the used car buyer, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has since 1997 provided the following classification of damage to vehicles that have been deemed an insurance write-off:

o Category A:

Scrap only - this vehicle should have been crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.

o Category B:

The bodyshell should have been crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.

o Category C:

Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. May be repaired and put back on the road. Has to pass an inspection to be re-registered as damaged repaired.

o Category D:

Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. When fixed can be re-registered as damaged repaired.

o Category F:

Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair. When fixed can be re-registered as damaged repaired.

If soyou need quite alot of work here...from what i can see you definatly need a rear quater (which will require cutting and welding), boot floor (again cutting and welding), rearbumper (straight forward), and rear slam panel!

There is quite alot of work there!

If i had know about this car "month ago i would have bought it of you for £350 as i needed a new engine and i could have used yours!

No they didnt bud but will phone them today and find out.

get someone to have a look at it to see if it's worth doing, find out how much it's worth after it's done( normaly 1k less than a straight car).
if not you'll get more than £350 in bits.

Cheers bud.Wondering now if to strip it(and sell the parts here not E-bay!).Then get what I can salvage and if they pay less than £350,still hit their insurence for the balance!! Where there's a way etc....

If you can wait long enough i am sure you will be able to sell bits of it on here. There is bound to be someone have a cambelt go in the next month and need a new engine - thats £200 at least as a guess, you could probably get good money (£100) for the rear axle if someone wants to do a rear disc conversion, if it has heated seats and a decent interior, you are talking another £150.

I wouldnt let it go for £350.

Look at it this way! either spend the cash and get it back on the road but as a dodgy motor...or....

Use you 2k + the money from selling...

Bonnet=£50
wings=£20 each
Doors=£40 each
Interior=£100
Wheels=£100
Rear axle=£150
Engine=£200 (thats what i paid but it was a bargin!)

+ £10 here and there for electric motors etc!

The go out and get yourselve a newer nicer HGT (if you want) which wont be dodgy and you will have the joys o getting a new car!

But expect alot of hassle with the parts, it wont be straight forward! You will have to strip the car down!
