Technical intermittent wiper stopped working

Hi, wiper stopped working on intermittent. Wipers working on normal setting as are washers. 1996 1.9td. Any ideas where to start. Also, strange, pulsing, noise started at the same time. Any help appreciated. Ian.

Being a 90's build,

It shouldn't be controlled by a computer

Do they still "Park" ok..?

I suspect it's the "track" within the wiper motor that is no longer making reliable contact..

I've had a few do this over the years

The attached diagram, should be applicable to your x230. If you look at the lower LHS corner of the diagram, it shows as the timer for intermittent operation of the wipers contained within the wiper motor. (Electronics indicated by transistor symbol, plus pulse symbol for ouput.) I would start by looking for corroded connections at the wiper motor.

Hi again chaps, Sorry to disappear but got invaded by, unannounced, family. Hope to get under the lid today. Will let you know the results once I've swung a few hammers, sprayed Servisol everywhere and done A LOT of swearing. Ian

Well it's done! First, looked at steering column switch. Removed covers and blasted with Servisol. No joy. Blasted wiper motor with WD40. No joy. Scuttle had to come off next. Snapped heads off 3 Allen screws. You'd think they'd last 30 years at least. Fiat cost cutting. Scuttle off, got access to wiper motor and arms. Blathered in WD40 and some other cheap stuff with a lubricant. No Joy. Ran out of patience and energy. Decided to put it back together. Who needs an intermittent bloody wiper anyway? Tested wipers. Still not working, nor is the offside washer. Investigated. I'd managed to route the washer pipe a way it shouldn't go and trapped it under the scuttle. It all had to come off again. Lots of swearing! 2 cups of tea later and off it comes again. Re-routed pipe and tested it worked before re-assembly. Success! Put it all back together. Final test. Washers both working. Brilliant! Wipers, normal, high speed,Great. Checked intermittent. Bloody things worked! God knows what I'd done, I don't.
