General Intermittent not starting

Afternoon.

My panda doesnt seem to want to start on random occasions! It runs fine, with no issues. But every now and then it doesnt start.

I get all the dash lights on strong, lights are bright, but turn the key and nothing at all.

I've rubbed down the earth straps, it had a new starter motor. Dont know what else to try.

Battery is fine.

Any thoughts?

Could be a few things but I'd be eliminating the energizing wire (small wire) to the starter. Is it registering battery volts when the key is twisted?

The earth cables can rot internally

Try a jumplead next time it fails to crank

i had two Panda ignition switches fail

random no crank but the headlights go off while trying to crank

normally you can find a knack to get them to work. Turn the ignition wait till all the lights go out. The either turn the key very slowly or more firmly than normal


if you want to prove it. Look if the 12V is missing at the small brown wire of the starter motor.


Had a Punto fail also with the same switch. Only the current fiat Panda hasnt failed on me. Yet


Make sure first. As its a right pain to change.

the Punto use to fail regularly

Fiat fixed the problem on Pandas by sealed the ends with heat shrink. In all the time I have been on this forum i cant remember a single one failing on a panda

they have changed the cable again and only time will tell if this one holds up.

having said that its easy to jump from battery negative to the gear selector cable bracket and cost nothing is fast and easy so is a good starting place. But i wouldn't expect too much unless the starter has been turning slowly previously. But its one more thing eliminated
