Hi all please help with this annoying problem we have with a 2001 punto 1.2 8v. Occasionally it fails to start, when it does start it runs well with no misfires. When it does not start you can turn the engine over and over to no avail. As soon as we connect our scanner and clear the codes it starts straight away, and will run all day maybe for a month without fault. After codes are cleared and is started up P0351 quickly comes back but still runs fine, no misfires. When it fails to start after a month or so the code p0352 is also present. These codes relate to the coil packs, but have changed both for known good ones, also the leads. Checked connections to the coils also. I am thinking possible ecu but normally when these go they run on 2 cylinders all the time. Tried a search on here but cannot find an answer. Please help as we have just sold this to our nephew and he not too happy about getting the AA out every month! Many thanks.

Got car back for a few days, have not touched it and no codes have come back since clearing them. Typical! Intermitent faults are a pain.

Just started car earlier it turned over for a while and when it did start eml was on, it ran lumpy for a second then was ok. Started straight way after that. Code p0351 is back so i have cleared it. Just as an exercise i pulled the coil wires of and tried to start, to see what codes came up, it was same codes so deffo related. Wigged pulled on all connections while running but cannot replicate the fault, checked plugs leads, coils wires ecu wires and connections.Thinking this has to be Ecu now, has anyone had an INTERMITTENT ecu on an 8v punto. Please help!

Just an update for anyone out there:). Started car up tonight. Ran fine. Noticed small flashes coming from the leads, this could possibly be messing with the ecu and shutting a coil down??? Thing is i have changed the leads for some spare ones i had lying around. Gona get a new set tommorrow. Problem is i might not no if iv cured it as it may well run ok for a month, and dont want him breaking down again.Suppose i could lend him my code reader and teach him how to use it in case it does break down. Any advice would be appreciated.

We fitted a complete engine wiring loom inc fuse box on saturday to rule out any dodgy wiring, and give him the car back. Guess what, the light has come back on but still runs. Not sure if i have this in the right section as not many replies. Any ideas, ECU???

Also changed the crank sensor as it came with the loom.

everybody wana be a car mechnic......
any way faults concern which coil pack ??
#1 or #2 ??

When just the light comes on but runs ok, scanner shows p0351, when it does not start p0352 comes on also. I can replicate the fault by pulling off the plug to the coils. If i just pull one plug off and try and start (it runs obviously on two cylinders) it i get 0351 or 0352 depending on which one we disconnect, connect it back up and it starts ok runs ok. If i pull both coil wires and turn the engine over (obviously wont start) reconect them and it still will not run, it shuts down untill we either clear the codes or take battery earth off for a few seconds. This is what is happening while the car is used which led us to believe faulty wiring before we condem the ecu. Read lots of posts regarding ecu faults and when they give up they just run on two cylinders and not intermittent. We have replaced both coils! We have given our nephew a 10mm spanner just in case both codes come on together and it does not start, and have told him to take the battery terminal off and reconect it, at least he wont be stranded anywhere or have to call the AA. Cheers.

Sparkplugs would create havoc all the time, not just intermittenly.

I got the same exact code p0351 when my ECU went. It didn't send proper signals to the coils and the OBD reader thought they were directly at fault.

Thanks for your replies, its looking like ecu then. I have a spare ecu kit/key/fusebox transponder which we bought in error for our car ages ago, we needed one that had electric windows and c/l, and it came off a car that did not. It should fit his ok, but the only problem is that his is 2001 with two lamda sensors and this ecu came off a 2000 car with one, one is m2 and other is m3. I think it will work enough to see if that was the problem, but it may put the light due to the lambda sensors, can live with that for the time being. cheers.
