Thanks for the tip, sometimes those little imperfections don't even show till you have some paint on it... Still it's nearly there! And I think I may have found someone who can help with cnc'ing the front plate ;)

I have spent the odd hour or so rubbing down the dome shape to get it nice and smooth, and then I decided that it would look better if I could make it match the instrument binnacle by finding a finish more like the top of the dash. I have had a play with wrinkle finish paint and it seems if I get the spray pattern right it looks fairly similar to the dash plastics. To separate it from the ivory finish at the front I have started to construct a 'lip' out of filler... Now I have to rub it all down again and leave a nice straight trailing edge......

I've had a test of the wrinkle finish and trimmed down the 'ridge' at the front, I just need to smooth it down a little more before I start painting properly ;)

I've seen those... They run windows ce so pig slow and of course you lose the integration... I'm trying to make this look like fiat designed it, but made a bit better lol
 
Yeah CE probably isn't the best, thought I saw a version that had windows mobile (the Windows 8 style) instead though. Re: Integration, supposedly it's canbus compatible, blue and me, steering wheel controls etc will still work.

I'm tempted... but it's a lot to shell out. Loving your creation though (y)

I think that steering wheel controls would work but I'm pretty sure that blue and me is built into the stereo....

...the next thing for me will most likely be another car pc, I'm afraid I have already bought another spare air vent so I can plan fitting the 7" touch screen (y)
 
I swapped my headunit and lost B&M as expected. I know there's a B&M ecu but it apparently needs something from the headunit to work. The main dislike is that the stock USB port is now decorative, and I don't think it's a simple case of connecting it to the USB on the new unit (of course I'd rather not cut any wires).

It's a project for another day but when dealing with CANBUS cars, nothing is straight forward.

Thanks for that, if I chose to go down the car PC route after this project I will probably use the AUX in from the console (back of connector for neatness) from the PC's audio out... I will lose the console USB port but have plenty of storage on the PC, and lose the skip track steering wheel controls. The phone will still work properly though and the steering wheel volume controls, and the big difference is that sat nav sound would now be mixed with audio output.

But like I say, I must be focussed and finish one project before starting the next!

I'm trying to step up the speed on this project in the hope I can get something in the car before the forum Xmas meal ;)

I have extended the part inside the vents to allow me to refit the slats.. And have also built up the bottom of the bezel with some scrap plastic which visually balances out the bottom of the opening.

I have also fitted a blank sheet of plastic behind the opening which has allowed me to make sure the mating edges of the bezel part meet properly.... Just waiting for it all to harden to do even more sanding ;)






 
After rushing a bit to try and get it ready for the New Forest run last week and bodging up the paintwork I returned to the project today and got things back on track :)

I spent a while with a bucket of water and the 1200 grit smoothing down my dodgy spray work and then dusted a little white primer over the low spots where the plastic was peeping through. Off for a quick test fit and photoshoot, then back indoors to work on the awkward job of re-making the vent slats. These are proving to be a real pain as they are now so short that they now don't have the flex necessary to pop one end into the hinge mount and I have had to trim to fit and then superglue each end in individually whilst glueing my fingers together.... When I have worked up the enthusiasm to get onto the other side I will fill the gaps, smooth them down and then apply the final coat of paint.. properly this time!
