Re: Ignition

I guess the link doesn't work any more. It was an electronic conversion kit that eliminates the points and condenser but looks like it uses the stock advance. It's from Ignition Car Parts in Essex. Their part # ICP EK 021 It's 45 pounds, a lot cheaper than the 123 ignitions though I've read good things about those. Just wondering who has converted to electronic, which kit they used, and if they're happy with the results.
Thanks, Ken

Ken,
In the days before I purchased 123ignition systems for my old cars, I used an after market Hall effect conversion. Basically it fitted into the stock distributor and, as you said, used the standard advance. It eliminated the need for points and condensors. I guess the only issue is that the basic distributor needs to be in good condition. If the advance mechanism isn't working well or the shaft is badly worn in the casing, you may be better off with a new unit. Otherwise, Hall effect conversions are an easy way to get rid of pesky points and have the added advantage that the distributor still looks stock - if you wish you can even leave the old condensor on the side, though it will no longer be connected to anything.

I found a couple of photos.

The device came from Hot Spark in the US (www.hot-spark.com) and it worked very well. The only reason I changed over to a 123ignition was because the old style mechanical advance was sticking a bit and needed new springs. Otherwise the car started and idled very well.
