Have a problem with M reg 1.4ie

Problem:
ANy gear, anytime, will suddenly cut power down to idle then rev high. Repeats. Very rythmical. Idle-idle-vroom-idle-idle-vroom etc.

Switching Off/On fixes till next time. DOes it most journeys. SOmetimes 4 or 5 per journey.

Mobile mechanic with computer diagnostic came out. Problem did not show up during his visit. (natch)

Test results = 1. Idle Actuator had reported error sometime in past. When error was cleared it did not re-occur so inconclusive maybe?.

Anyways, have noticed that operating temp is about 70 deg. Used to be run at about 90 deg. Problem started at same time as low temp reading. Will try replacing thermostat as first step as suggested in other post. (Thanks Massiv01)

Any other suggestions anyone?
 
Had similar problem with a Tipo 1.4 Formula '91. Basically the vacuum in the distributor that deals with advance ignition had a blockage. The solution was to disconnect the hose from the distributor end and fit a screw to the end of the pipe to maintain constant pressure. Either that or replace the distributor as the vacuum was all built in. Maybe you have a similar problem?
 
Check all the small pipes, they have a tendancy to split where they join, they are not special & most motor factors sell the stuff by the meter, just cut to length and replace. Also check the vacuum tube in to the electronic control (if you have that fitted) ours is down in the front nearside wing under the washer bottle, the pipe dropped off when it split and the timing went haywire.
