I think my tappits are knackered. Is nico doing me harm if he keeps me on the road??

I started making an awful matally noise a couple of days ago, and it seems to be getting steadily worse.

Facing my bumber, the noise seems to eminate comes from just right of the belts and my air con motor, where my manifold is.

On tick over it's only a tap, tap,tap, every second, but this gets much worse the faster I go. Garage is booked for at least a week!

If it is a tappit, is there 20 of them just like my valves? Does a garage have to replace them all (I duno if it would be obvious which was a fault without the engine running).

What might 20 new tappits cost? (I suspect the labout will be 10 times the parts!????) is there anything else it could be? (hard to tell at the best of times I know..)

ps. I can type Wimmy! nico has drafted three articles totalling 8 sections so far, but has yet to finish them.

At idle you'd be getting 7 taps a second from a tappet.

sounds more like 3-4, but I could easily be wrong. Any suggestions as to what else it could be perhaps?

I'm booked in to have my cams fitted on Monday. Am guessing i could ask the garage thats guna do my tuning, if they can fix it, as i suspect I the costs of fixing the tappit (if it is that) could double, if I don't have it seen to at the same time as the cams.

Might mean they have to keep the car a week tho, whilst they get the parts. So i'd like to try and get an idea of what's in store (as my local guy might otherwise be cheaper).

If ones gone Tom, does that mean all 20 really should be changed (might I have no other option!?)

Get it sorted before fitting the new cams. You could totally bugger something up.

Cold shivers

I almost stalled again when nico started me up after work. My idling was all over the shop for a minute or two. This I think is just freak coincidence, two things going wrong at once. According to guy at my local I called in at, my irratic idle (and this rattlesnake ticking that seems to come from the juncture of the air feed and where that last branch of the inlet manifold is) he reckons is cos of a partial blockage from the air where it feeds in (around the butterfly bit??).

As for that awful thrashy sound coming from around my outlet manifold, I've told nico he really shouldn't drive me anymore till we figure out what to do. Says he'll catch the train tomorrow but we might risk going to Leeds aft work on friday to pick up our new seats.
Guna ring the tuning place and ask em if they'll consider doing the work - whatever is needed. I can't beleive nicos guna let complete strangers fiddle with my 20 valves, but little other option I guess if we're guna be roadworthy for Stanford.

Can you believe...nico's more upset about these things going wrong with me than I am!!

If its stalling then its quite a serious prob. A single failed tappet is unlikely to cause such a prob.

I think what I'll do is drive it to work tomorow, then at lunch, drop in at the main fiat dealer up the road and ask if they'll give me their opinion. I bet they 'suggest' I HAVE to book it in, but I'll beg on bended knee just to have one of their guys try and give a diagnosis by listening at least.

my fiat dealer charged me fifty eight quid to just look at my car dont know what yours will be like,

i have a tappet noise coming from the underside of my car, i have put some forte top end treatment in. my tappet noise doesn't get worse with more revs, actually it makes it so i can't hear it as the normal engine noise drowns it out. wil see if the treatment sorts it out.

this morning nico bribed the mechanic at his local garage with a bag of Tesco finest homebake cookies, but he wasn't much help.

We'll have to try the same trick on Picadilly (Fiat)
