hey chaps and ladies,

for those of you who know, the 2.4 turbo petrol is available in the Marea in Brazil (I think) but cost's too much to import.

I'm not to clued up on inner workings of engines, but from what I can tell, the 2.4 fiat engine is the same 5 pot 2L engine from a hgt, just bored out bigger.

My question is (if you haven't guessed from the title) is......

Would it be possible to turn a 2.4jtd engine into a 2.4 turbo petrol?

Would it be as easy as I'm thinking with changing, injectors, plugs, ecu, etc...
or is it just a dream?

Thanks

Darren

Are diesel engines not much bulkier than similar size petrols? You'd be better just sticking a GTA engine in there lol

When I look at the engine, it looks the same size as the hgt engine.

Just wondering as from what I have read and understood, the 2.4L is the 2L just bored out bigger, and is it possible to go from diesel to petrol.

I'm not going to do it yet anyway as I need the mpg, but maybe in the future it could be a project.

Darren

I'm sure the 2.4 diesel is a fair bit taller than the 2.0HGT. It may look similar in dimension from the top I suppose.

so is it possible to convert a diesel engine to run on petrol?

thanks :)

I've had two hgt's, then I bought the 2.4jtd.

been chatting to my mate who's a mech. He said it's possible but due to it being diesel it will be long stroke and could end up with less power than I started with.

I was only wondering if it would be worth it in the future, but obviously it will be money not-well spent.

just thought it could be a little project to try in the future.

Darren

then your mate is a, well there is no polight way to put it, just the sheer pressure that the deasel is injected at would cause massive problems for petrol

I understand the compression of diesel is much much higher than petrol amongst other things.
But it is possible but would cost loads to do it I have been told, and just wouldn't be worth it.

As I said, it's hypothetically speaking.

thanks for all replies.

Was just a thought I had in work.

Gotta keep looking for an engine from brazil then ;)

Darren

correct!

Fill it with foam, seal up a few gaps, away we go!

Could put a huge propellor on it too as the engine has loads of torque!

thanks for that :-D

Huge difference in compression ratios would just be the first of many problems to overcome on such a conversion.
Although overall engine dimensions could be similar to the petrol, the extra weight means different spring rates, antiroll bar, engine mounts, gear ratios plus all the differing electrical and fuel systems - it would become a long (and probably expensive) nightmare :(

As a general rule, the only thing worth having out of a diesel version of a car is the extra soundproofing...

Just wondering if I've ever perused a more pointless thread on this forum......

Look, we all like a bit of a "project" to tinker around with but given the money and time you would have to invest in this project, why don't you just go out and buy a different bloody car...you/we won't have to go through all this cobblers then....!!!!!

Look Martin,

I was just thinking if it could be possible and if so, would it be cheaper than trying to import one.

Nice simple thread.... is it possible to do?

If you don't like it, don't read it, easy enough.

Darren

And, I love my car as it is.

Was just looking for a project to do over time, not to my car, but one which I would buy for the project.
Then I could go to the fiat bravo/a, marea meets, in a 2.4 turbo.
Thought it could be a little thing to try, but obviously would cost too much.

Looks like iI'm sticking to my rover v8 in a robin reliant!

if you were prepared to spend the money

then you could rip out the front end of the car, engine, fuel tank, front struts, arb's front breaks, loom, the lot

take the complete front end of a coupe (best to get one thats been in a rear end shunt or something so you have everything

send the block off to be bored, they will go to 2.5, replace the internals for forged as they need to be stronger to cope with the extra mass flying about

and then drop all that back in at the front. i believe the mounts are the same location

you would then need to have a complete camber/allinment set up as well as a cutome map created for the 2.5 (larger injecters 255 fuel pump)

it CAN be done, but its big money, some one on the forum just finished a 2.5 conversion...he has spent 3 k just on the parts being shipped

other problems you will run in to are ABS sensers, loom fun...... its a large project

in simple terms as said no, unless you just want to lob cash left right and centre!

best thing to do is to get the 2.4 from the stilo, then get a decompression plate then turbo it using marea / coupe bits n pieces!

I want to put a 2.4 bottom end on my hgt then supercharge it at some point (will probably stay a dream mind :()

I am seriously considering a supercharger at the moment.... but it may stay in my dreams for a while.

The Ratmk2... is here... and Going Euro ;)
