A quick question, how long does it take (on average) to change injectors in a 1.6? The rain's stopped but more forecast for 3pm and i was wondering if i had enough time to attempt thids job.

a first attempt, using a careful approach, it should take about 2 hours all together.

you need to:

-remove the 2 bolts holding upper inlet manifold to head
-remove 5 (i think) torx bolts holding upper inlet manifold to lower inlet manifold
-remove the 2 fuel lines from the back left of the upper inlet manifold
-remove the 2 torx bolts holding the bracket for the 2 fuel lines to the upper inlet manifold (back left)
-raise the upper inlet manifold a few inches by wedging something underneath it.
-remove the brakcet at the right hand sinde of the lower inlet manifold. cant remember what its for but theres 2 bolts, one at top one at bottom.
-remove the 3 torx bolts that hold the fuel rail to the head
-pull the fuel rail (hard) so the injectors are clear of the head
-slide the fuel rail to the right so it can be removed, this may require the battery to be reomved for clearnance, and the fuel lines will need to be slid along as well
-remove the fuel injector wiring harness from the fuel rail
-remove the injectors (each one has a metal clip)

now do the reversal and you're all done. (y)

i would suggest you fit all 4 injectors so you have a matching set. keep your old ones as spares.

Thanks Jug, you're a bloody star! Wish me luck buddy.....I'm going in!

Well Jug, such is my luck  I followed your instructions to the letter.....until i got to the 5 torx bolts holding the upper inlet manifold to the lower (I'd already gone round before starting the job and wd40'd all the bolts) 4 of them looked a little rusty but i plowed on nevertheless, and then the second one just gave up the ghost.
It seems the torx bit was too badly corroded and it just rounded off (the star is now a circle). Fortunately it hadn't moved more than a mm before doing so or i'd have even bigger troubles.
So now i can't get the damn thing apart anyway.
Looks like i'll be cancelling christmas to pay for this one to be done. :bang:

oh crap!!!!!

i guess you may have used a slightly too small torx bit?

do you have a grinder? you could easily grind the bolt head off, and then once the upper inlet manifold is out the way grip whats left to get it off, then just replace the one bolt after its all back together (or dont bother, 1 wont hurt:) )

there's always something that goes wrong with every job, dont be beaten by a little bolt, just get the angry tools out. (y)

i wish i could pop over and lend a hand, but its a bit far for me :)

oh yeah in my instructions i forgot to add, you need to remove the dipstick, well remove the 2 bolts holding it in place and then move it out the way. at the bottom its just pushed in so you can pull it off and replace it no problem.

also there are 1 or 2 hoses going coming from the throttle body to the lower inlet manifold and then on to other things (dipstick?) moving them out the way makes the whole job easier.

No problem there my friend, i noticed what had to get the hell out of the way before i started and removed accordingly(love the way you can rotate the dipstick out of the way without disconnecting once you've undone the bolt).
Had more than a few pints now and things don't seem as bad lol. Really appreciate the support on this though, you're becoming a damn good friend ;)
I'm considering;
a)Taking it to a local guy who works out of his garage.
b)Getting on to the local fiat dealers(bunch of ass wipes in my opinion) and getting hold of some replacement bolts before i cut this bugger off and possibly have trouble with the others.
You know, it sucks, even though i've never done anything like this on a car before i felt, not only confident(giving the instructions you gave) but eager to attempt this. I feel that given the speed i was moving i would have had the job done in about 2.5 hours.
Gutted!

2 hours Jug, it took you about 20 mins on the Marea LOL

i've done it a couple of dozen times now. :D

stark i wouldnt worry about replacing the damaged bolt in a hurry, there is a black rubber gasket between the lower and upper manifolds which will ensure an airtight seal even with one or two bolts missing. you could probably get bolts with the same thread pattern and length at most hardware stores if there is no scrapyard handy.

I might attempt to change my injectors ... but it looks like a scary job! lol
Either that or put sticky tape over the injector light! lol

I was just told by my brother to change the oil once i've changed the injectors as there may be a problem with unused fuel getting into the oil. Any truth to this?

the engine oil should not be able to come into contact with any fuel or exhaust gas containung unburnt fuel, they remain isolated from each other at all times (except maybe if you had a head gasket leak)

unburnt fuel often collects in the cat so once the injectors are fixed if you smell something burning look at the cat, if its glowing red it means the unburnt fuel is now burning, and probably destroying your cat. careful it doesnt set fire to anything, especially grass.
