General Hi I have a engine problem

I bought a 2000 1.9 diesel a few weeks ago all was going okay until yesterday. I now have a loud rattling tapping sound coming from the engine when I come off the accelerator this disappears again as soon as I put my foot back on the accelerator.

I did notice a slight rattle before but as its a diesel just thought this was a diesel noise but the problem has got suddenly alot louder. Any ideas what it could be ?

Probably the crankshaft pulley has separated. It comprises two pulleys bonded by rubber and the rubber separates causing the outer pulley, which drives the serpentine belt to move, hence the noise related to engine speed.

About £80 and change for the pulley and half an hour to replace.
