Hey all, I recently purchased a 2014 doblo 1.6 multi jet and I have an issue that my local garage can’t seem to pinpoint.

Each morning after sitting overnight I’ll start it up and it will sound like not all pistons are firing properly and the gas pedal won’t do anything it just sounds like the engine is struggling to turn along with this it emits a cloud of blue smoke. If I leave it for about 15 seconds the revs will jump slightly and it will start idling normally and the smoke stops. It only does this after being sat overnight it will start normally through the day, it doesn’t do it every morning maby 1 in 10 times it starts normally seems like if the temperature overnight has been quite warm it will start fine.

Would anyone have any insight into this?

Thank you

How long does your glow plug light stay on for? Mines stays on for only about 2 seconds even when low temp. Seems like there's a number of things it can be though

Sounding like a Cold cylinder..

What are warm restarts like?
If it’s over 20oC it will start normally sometimes not always, but now that it’s cold like 0-8oC most mornings it will always struggle, turn key, leave for a couple seconds, start, hunting and blue smoke for about 5 seconds then the engine revs to about 2k and it then idles perfect

I meant if you drive it for 5 minutes, then stop the motor...

What is the restart like? 🤔

That is Still COLD atmospherics.. But WARM cylinders 😉

Ohhh it’s random but yes sometimes if it’s just a short journey it will play up again on the next start.

Say I set off in the morning on a 20 min drive then 4 hours later I start it again it will be fine.

If I do a 5 min journey say to a shop then start back up a couple of mins after stopping it will play up.

Hope that makes sense, it will pretty much always struggle every morning unless it’s quite warm outside

Exactly as the thread. Starts from cold. Runs lumpy low revs. Won't rev up for about 15 20 seconds then revs smooth out and it's fine for the rest of the day.

My van has done exactly the same for months and been in many different garages and nobody seems to be getting to the bottom of it

So far I’ve had

New egr valve
Air filter
Fuel filter
Maf sensor
New glo plug
Intake manifold cleaned

It’s really doing my head in now, so please if anyone has an answer to the original question I’d really really appreciate it

I assume the entire heater plug system including relays and wiring etc is 100% and that the engine is in good mechanical order compression wise as low compression could be involved, but garage should see other symptoms pointing in that direction if that was the case?
Air getting in the fuel line?
I had an older Doblo that I proved the problem by jury rigging a temporary fuel supply on the wing directly to the fuel pump.
Problem was drawing air at the plastic fuel pipe connector at tank, the rubber sealing O ring was letting in air.
Unlikely on the later fuel systems, but anything affecting fuel supply is worth checking, given most everything else has been checked.
Could even be a weak fuel pump or injectors causing low common rail pressure. I have had dodgy new fuel filters in the past.:)

So from a drivers point of view on a cold day what exactly do you experience?
By the way what age, condition and mileage?
I have a 2010 Doblo 1.6 Maxi van with around 106k miles and though not perfect does start every time no problem, though the temp. here is a lot milder than where you are, a mild frost is about the max. this Winter so far.;)

So it’s a 2014 in good condition with only 42k on the clock

The problem I have is that when I start the van after say 4 hours of non use it starts straight away but the Revs are bouncing around and there is nothing when I push on the accelerator, after 15 to 20 seconds it’s like everything clicks in and the van runs perfect

From what you say, I think it may need a good diagnostic specialist to check it over, maybe with a fault logging tool in the OBD port to read what is happening when the fault is actually happening.
We have one down here, the motortrade don't like paying their prices, however they are good and it saves wasting much more money in unnecessary labour and parts not needed.
Many people on the Forum use MES diagnostic software tool to help locate faults and there is a specific section who are more familiar with using it to diagnose issues, they may be able to help guide you if you want to try to locate the fault yourself using that software.
Are you getting a good fuel supply from the tank on start up, if not then rail pressure could be low until it builds up, this may show on diagnostic tool.
Often the part needing replacing or fixing is less expensive than the time taken to find it, which is why you have to weigh up your best option.:)
