Greetings everyone.

Basic question but my girfriend needs to get a replacement car urgently for work, and I'm looking for feedback / info on a Fiat she's seen.

If anyone could point out good and bad things about this car - as well as big service mileage and costs ( I have an Alfa  :D ) - I'd be most grateful.

Is it crucial to have a Fiat service history. Any known issues / weak spots ( cambelt on the Alfas ).

The car is:

2002 Fiat Stilo 1.6 16v Dynamic 3 door.

Thanks everyone :)

Same model as mine then
1.6 Gearbox i would say is the weakest point/most expensive item as they are poorly manufactured and it's a gamble whether yours is the one going to blow a hole through the gearbox casing. Some last (mine is on 85k miles) others don't, it's a pain.

Original 1.6 clutch is exceedingly weak and only just pulls and is on the edge of slipping, lasts for ages though and is fine if you replace it. I replaced mine at 70k milage when i got fed up of the slipping but it had loads of life remaining

Small electrical niggles like all cars but you'll be used to those with Alfas:)

Cambelts aren't so much a worry on Stilos provided you do them at the recommended times and use the correct tools. Quite easy to do and none are engine out jobs

Dont forget to check out for front and rear spring corrosion and snappage..lots of info on stilo front springs on here..:bang:

Oh and drop links on the front as well..

I bought an 02 1.6 Dynamic about 4 weeks ago and I love it. I have had to buy new tyres and brakes but aside from that its been awesome and a dream to drive. You didnt mention the mileage?

Mine didnt have full service history but it did have recent receipts for a cam belt change and a replacement gearbox. I would say that if you have no record of when the cambelt was done, to get it done asap, you can also negotiate the price on that. I had a cambelt break on a Punto once and the repair was £450 and that was only because the car was moving VERY slowly when it happened so the damage wasnt as bad as it could have been.

Now that I have Stilo and know a bit more about them, I would be looking for any warnings that come up on the dash when you start it, 2 weeks ago we bought an 02 1.2 Active Stilo for my son and it has a constant airbag warning issue, we knocked the seller right down on the price because of that and a few minor dents. Its still a great little car, we just may have to spend some money on it.

Other things to look out for: Make sure you have both keys and they both open the car AND start it, a new key from Fiat is £199+vat.

Ask the seller if they have the code for the car, if you dont have that and you ever need to get keys cut Fiat will charge you around £34 to find the code for your car.

Good luck!
