Technical helpp! gear oil leak

Thankyou,
Looks like im gonna have to ring round a dew scrappys and get a few quotes. Im surprised the garage that did my clutch 3 months ago didnt mention this lol. And oi my car aint old hahaaa! Shes only 9 and only done 58k miles. Do you have a rough idea how much id get for her if i was gna sell? Would there be a big differance in money if i was to sell it with a dodgey gearbox? Sorry for all the questions.
Marc

You will get its true value if you repair and sell. If you sell with a blown gearbox you will lose even more money than it costs to fix it.

The mechanic should have checked out the gearbox shaft. Any wobble means the bearing has failed and the oil seal will soon follow. But many dont bother - they just do the clutch. Who knows what was done on this one.

It needs to be properly checked out and then decide what to do. ATM its educated guesswork.

ive rang around a few local garages today,
going to take it in to a couple tomorrow and see what the verdict is. started getting clutch judder today not major but i could feel it. so sounds like il need another clutch but il just get that done while the box is off. Thanks for the help will let you know what the verdict is when i find out!.
Marc..

had a busy day getting quotes,
had a few some as high as £800 for recon box and new clutch.
cheapest ive had so far is £300 for the lot. that seems pretty good tbh, took me hours and hours on the phone but just shows what abit of time and patience gets you lol. does £300 seem quite cheap, just wondering if its too cheap for box, clutch and fitting lol.

If the box worked OK when filled with new oil just replace the seals, I am going to do it on mine, I already replaced the clutch and should have done the seals as well, No point in putting in another box just for the sake of two oil seals,as well as that the seals on the other box could be f..ked. You need to check the gearbox housing is not cracked, sounds as though you are loosing oil very fast. drain plug could be cross threaded also. Have a good look underneath. Just replaced both seals on my X1/9 today, with drives out of the way about 10 minutes to remove old ones, clean housing and drift in the new ones.(y)

Clutch and fitting is about £200 at a small garage. But that leaves £100 for the gearbox which seems a bit low so got to ask about its mileage and condition. Bear in in mind the input shaft bearing has to be replaced if there is any slack and that will not be a cheap job.

This might help

Digger is right for the drive shaft seals, but the problem seems to be the input shaft seal. That generally fails when the bearing behind fails and a repair job demands a gearbox stripdown.

thats why im finding it really hard to fork out on a new box Digger, when i fill it with oil it is perfect. no noise, each gear is slick and smooth and drives like a dream. where is the drain plug on the box, is the the one facing back of the car??

WhiteSei ive done it all seperatly, like found a box at the scrappy, thats 120, with a 12 monthgaurantee . clutch is 50 quid of ebay and fitting seperatley is about 130. however i did get a quote from a garage for the job lot for 330 but box only comes with a 12 week gaurantee so it makes sense to do abit of leg work and get the parts myself.

Deffo pays to do some legwork. :)

When you get the box, replace both driveshaft seals as they might have got damaged/worn. Also do the input seal. Its less stressed but why not while you can. Use masking tape on the shaft so any grooves/splines wont cut the seal.

When you get the box see is there is any play in the input shaft bearing. Others with more experience than me will tell you how much is ok.

If the OP seals are shot oil will come out immediately.
If the IP seal is shot oil only comes out when the engine is running and worse when the car is moving (as the shaft can shift sideways on its loose bearing).
Clutch judder further supports IP shaft leaks.

It certainly does,

you wouldnt of thought i known absolutley naff all about cars this time last year, My little punto has made me do my research lol. Im actually contemplating doing the job myself, :s i can manage without the car for a few days!
Theres a really good post on here that shows you what to do step by step and hey if it goes tits up its no biggy, not asif its a 50k car. we all have to learn somwhere.
Going to pick up my box tomorrow and hopefully my clutch should be here in the next few days.

you never know this time next week percy the punto might be up and running :D.

Cheers for all the help and advice mate! :D

just to add my little bit
if going to breaker for the gearbox mrlk93 look to see the gearbox hasnt been steamed off so you will see if its oil tight by the fact it will be mainly gunge free
any decent breaker would leave the driveshaft stumps in so gearbox keeps all its oil intact
with regards clutch £50 points to recon and these can be hit and miss regarding judder, ideally buy a better quality luk one from a factors at £100 ish

Every little helps s and b lol,
il make sure i check the gearbox befor handing any money over, like i said before theres a 12 month waranty on it so they can have it back if anything happens lol.
And no the clutch is brand new, most clutches on ebay are around the 50 pound mark for my spec punto. Thankyou for your advise :)

ive done my research into clutches and ive heared of that one. im not doing any work on my car now, im going to part ex it for a newer punto with less miles and better spec :). picking it up next week :D.

give it a good drive before spondies go on the table then:)
i never can understand why every 2b punto i drive back from the testing station puts its red steering wheel symbol on:mad:
maybe puntos just hate me:D

Oh dont worry i will, not letting myself get conned again,
getting a good deal tho, there giving me 600 for my car and then ive gota pay 500 for a 54 plate sporting in canary yellow! looks the dogs!!!! only done 58,000k.
i think they just feel sorry for me with all the problems ive had with this one. will still be sad to see it go. my stearing has never once let me down. can hear it clunking on full lock but never had the light or it fail. didnt mention that to the dealer though :p.
