Plusgas??? Is that WD40 in my stupid language?

Paul R

so is that one bolt the only thing holding it in?

Paul R

Plusgas is a proper unruster, WD40 is a bit poo.

I've never had the pleasure of trying to get an ABS sensor off so can't help you much.

Sorry mate can't help. Fortunately the ABS on my Brava 1.8 ELX is working fine.

My last car was a Daewoo Espero 1.8 and the ABS warning light stayed on. I started to fiddle about with the sensors and used a feeler guage to check the gap. There was a massive spark and bang as I had caused a short circuit between the sensor and the wheel!

In the end I got a car spark to wire the ABS warning light into the engine management system light so that it went out after a few seconds.

It meant the ABS didn't work but I got my MOT certificate and got rid of the care a few months later. The purchaser knew about the ABS problem.

re

can you heat up the metal around it with blow torch?

Re: re

Can i just help clearing up a common mis-understanding on here , the MOT does'nt care about the ABS system on your car , ie it will pass whether the ABS light is on or off . Just thought i'd mention it ;)

Re: re

My mechanic told me that MOT testing stations have details (for each model) of the length of time the ABS warning light should stay on before going off.

I was told that as my light stayed on the MOT tester would register a brake fault and fail the car.

I appreciate that normal brake function would still exist.

Anyone else got an opinion?

Re: re

The MOT test does not test the function of ABS. ABS is not a legal requirement for cars in the UK and is not tested. Same with the airbag light.

Re: re

Thanks Andy & Tom for this clarification.

I'll tell my mechanic.

Re: re

Saw this in another thread. This suggests that if the ABS light sequence does not follow the correct sequence the car will fail its MOT.

Views anyone?

The Testers Manual
3.4 Anti-Lock Braking Systems

Information Method of Inspection Reason for rejection

This ABS inspection applies to all systems fitted as 'standard', and to 'optional' systems fitted.
When testing vehicles that have ABS fitted the road wheels should not be allowed to rotate clear of the standing surface with the ignition on as this can cause the ABS system to indicate a fault which may require specialist equipment to rectify

Missing components

Where a vehicle is presented for test with an ABS component obviously missing but, follows the correct sequence of operation, the defect must be brought to the attention of the presenter.

If the vehicle is fitted with an anti-lock braking system, check that

a. a warning lamp is fitted
b. the lamp illuminates
c. the lamp follows the correct sequence of operation
d. does not indicate a fault.

REASONS FOR REJECTION

Note: The sequence varies with the type of system. Refer to the manufacturers or other reliable data, eg purpose produced charts, books, etc. 1. The warning lamp
a. is missing
b. does not illuminate
c. does not follow the correct sequence
of operation
d. indicates an ABS fault.

Re: re

Do you really think the average MOTer knows the light sequence for every car? Nope!

ABS is NOT part of the test.

Re: re

Tom - I suspect that in practice you are correct when you say that testing stations do not have data on every model's ABS light sequence.

That said, it would appear that a test of the warning light sequence IS, stictly speaking, a part of the MOT test - even if it is more often observed in the breach.

In the case of my old Daewoo the ABS light stayed permanently on - so would have failed the MOT.
