Welcome from a fellow noob! Yep, the petrol cap takes a bit of getting used to and I cursed it the first few times I filled up. I think the correct procedure is insert key, turn to the left, then turn cap left to remove. Hang cap (with key still inserted) on little hook, fill up, then replace cap on filler neck, twist to right, then, while holding cap, turn the key to the right to lock. Key should then come out easily from a securely locked cap.

I'm sure they could have made it easier...

I didn't struggle with the petrol cap. Hold it and turn the key! Not too difficult to work out!

Thank you for that :D

The fuel cap catches out many people. I went with my Mum to put fuel in our 500 when we first got it, as I knew she'd be stood there in a panic at the petrol station.

Fiat used this set-up for years (my 1993 Punto had it, as did the 2000 Punto, 2004 Stilo & 2013 MiTo). However, you may be pleased to know that they've started rolling out a new 'cap-less' fuel flap on their new models - the Panda & 500L already has it (amongst other Fiat Group models) - so should you like the 500 & decide to go for an all-new one in a few years, you're likely not to have to contend with the fuel cap!

I manage with mine but then again I only use it about once every two weeks which is such a luxury!!

My OH is on her 2nd 500 and I got so fed up with her not getting to grips with the petrol cap and continually finding it loose, I bought her a keyless aluminium one.:D(y)

Thank you everybody ,managed to get the petrol cap off (All by myself) then had trouble getting the thing back on,but hubby thank goodness was with me,he did it ok

Another new owner (1 week!) and although I've not filled him up yet I did have a fiddle with the petrol cap and I get where you are coming from.
I'll have to go and fill up on Sunday but I'll take the other half with me as a standby so if it all goes tits up I can yell for help lol

hi
according to ebay its the same as a mk2 punto so i would change it for one of these off a 2005 model as they were non locking
these locking ones are a pain so even ive done away with mine its just a turn and a click now

that's pretty much my experience ( from 20 years of FIAT's) and our '04 panda is just as you say..

however my 2013 punto doesn't have a proper " hook " to hang on..

so - to save it swinging around + scratching the paint (in an ARC)

I take the key out EVERY TIME the filler cap is off.. now THAT's a PIA : -{

the modern "ford-type" quick filler sounds good,
AND presumably just as secure ( non-syphon),

I'd imagine the new cap-less system is more secure than the non-locking caps found on some Punto's & previous shape Panda's (complete penny pinching given how cheap even the locking caps must be), but I was a bit disappointed to see that (at least on some new Fiats) the outside fuel flap on these cap-less cars doesn't lock.

Renault has done the cap-less fuel system for years but their outer fuel flap always locked, even if it was just with a plastic catch. Just prevents people chancing their luck I think, so bit poor that Fiat haven't decided for theirs to lock with the central locking like Renault's do.

Perhaps Italy doesn't have the issue with fuel thefts that can sometimes occur (albeit not much now) in the UK.

I only fill up once a month or so and occasionally it still catches me out and I fumble with it a few times before I get it working -- it's the putting the cap back on that I usually have trouble with.

Italian car, right? :D

I have the the same system on my 2010 Punto. There is a lip sticking out on the fuel flap (opposite of the hinge). I can hang my cap with the key still in it there. There is no paint scratching.

Thanks for the pic..!! :)

looks pretty similar to mine..,
no where near positive enough location for my liking though:(

the panda has a HOOK at the lowest part of the petrol flap "door",
and a slot in the bottom of the cap that hangs directly ;)

so IF it slips it just falls down AWAY from the car, the Punto one is tethered so it is dragged back towards the car (n)

anyway..,
got to fill up a ford with the capless system yesterday.. far superior system (y),
(AND a great TDCi engine :D
reminds me of my old FIAT Tipo TD's :slayer:)
