Technical Head gasket blown, balancing options, little money

Instead of taking everything as a whole

Let's start with little steps,

No belt connected

Camshaft locked into place

If you slide this little tool along edge 3

Does the pip 1 slide into a valley 2

If yes, you don't need this tool again, you don't need to undo the T55 pulley bolt

If it hits the top of a tooth then you will need to undo the T55 bolt

Would it not be Impossible to change the oil seal under here without taking it off

Otherwise it would more than likely leak like a sieve after being disturbed

Depending how its put back will depend whether it will time correctly

For the sake of 10 seconds, to check it

I would start here

Really quick — what kind of coolant should be used with this one?

I also scrubbed that sensor in the cam cover — code went away then back again in one minute

I also just made the mistake of mixing green and red coolant (didn’t run it) so now I’ve poured like £35 down the drain😢

I put any OAT coolant (Organic Acid Technology)

Normally pink

In and it's fine

Lasts around 5 years or 50,000 miles
Me too. buy it in generic 5 litre packs of concentrate from local factor in whatever brand he is stocking at the time. Pink/red in colour. G12 I think?

The Scala, like the Ibiza, is running on a new brew I'd not seen before - purpleish in colour and called G13 I think?

Antifreeze used to be such a simple thing, either blue or green but all seemed to do the same thing. Not now though, you mix them at your peril!

Just remembered I've got some of the stuff left over from last time I changed the Panda and Punto coolant:

Concentrated coolant on the left and deionized water on the right.

For those of a more technical turn of mind here's the back of the antifreeze container:

I’m also beginning to suspect the VVT needs replaced, but I’m seeing that it’ll be between £60-100 (I’m already over my budget for repairing the car)

Could I try soaking the VVT in brake cleaner or WD40?

Or is there any way I can clean/repair it like a fuel injector?

(I scrubbed it with a tooth brush and that held off the P0016 code for a few minutes)

Has the vvt solenoid valve mesh strainer been cleaned? Sticky solenoid and or clogged mesh can cause P code you are seeing

Antifreeze colour can been deceptive as there is no set rule for what colour means what. One makes red can be another makes green .

P0016 still ?

Does the little little tool line up with a tooth

If you do a complete revolution of the crank clockwise and lock it does the cam tool line up

I take it there was no error light before the gasket change

Haven’t done anything with timing yet, I know if I do the camshaft I’ll have to reseal it, and the gasket sealer comes into conflict with getting groceries at the moment

Check the cam sensor is plugged in on the right hand side it's easy to miss as it's behind the coolant pipes

Check the code is really clearing, I have problems with this on the later eco cars

Clear the codes, switch the ignition off and back on again without restating it should show no codes present or pending

Looks good, I just use a tooth brush and meths
Delay on the code, but still got it

It seems possible it’s bad after the coolant moving with oil with blown HG, and idk if the last owner really changes the oil regularly

Occasionally there was a CEL when it would stutter before the HG repair, but my scanner couldn’t pick up the code for some reason

The code seems to be clearly fine at the moment, I’ve cleared the code, shut of ignition, removed scanner, then read it again and it showed no codes

Then on start it might take 30 seconds to a minute (especially if I’ve just cleaned the VVT) for it to come back on

And to clarify, I’ve never gotten this code before the HG change

I haven’t bothered to try correcting timing yet, just don’t have the tools on hand (gave them all back to my mechanic) and I know I would have to reseal the cam cover

I am, however, doing a radiator flush before my new coolant arrives tomorrow

Rn I’m letting it sit with the flush additive and water (is it okay to let that sit overnight?)

Does the solenoid get blocked again, it's not unusual to have to clean it several times after major head work

I would expect P0011 more than P0016 for a blocked solenoid filter though

If you are 100% the timing. Is correct, and the timing was slightly out originally you can do a phonics relearn

I am trying to avoid this at the moment as the engine has to be warm and able to rev high three times

I think the timing is still slightly out, don’t have resources at the moment to correct it
