I'm sure i have a problem with my 155 HGT..I have not taken it back to the garage yet as i wanted some advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. (Yes, you guys! (and gals!))

When i first got my car (about 6 weeks ago), my car used to tick over about 900rpm, now it ticks over between 650-700rpm. When i pull off, it seems to hesitate, i have tried to get my missus to time the 0-60, and it is approx 12-13 secs. (even accounting for my missus' female inaccuracy..lol)

When i pull of, as i mentioned above it seems to struggle until it gets to about 1200rpm, fine until 3000rpm, struggle again until 3800rpm, fine again until 5400rpm, then struggle again. (These figures are obviously estimated)

It is due for a service in about 800 miles, it has done 47,200 without a cambelt change (doing it at the 48k service)

Can anyone shed any light on this, or give me any advice?...should i live with it until it has its service?...or have i got a major problem brooming?

Please Help...

Hi - My HGT 155 makes 0 - 60 in bout 8 secs so somethings wrong there.

The HGT tends to be slow upto 3000rpm - then kicks in nicely after that - i dont have any dead points after 3000.

Hope that helps a bit

:)

Mr Al.

Thanks for the reply...It does help a bit..but only to show i have a problem..:(

Hopefully someone can shed some light..

Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem

Air Con is off, not sure what fuel (Possibly shell, but not optimax), i have to fill her up this morning, i will post what type.

Do think a bottle of injector cleaner would do any harm?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem

sorry to crash your post. but i did leave a post for you, as i live in cwmbran, just wanted to know what part of south wales you lived in...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem

Thanks for the suggestions about the Fuel

Filled her up this morning at a texaco garage, Most of the lower rev range hesitation seems to have gone, but there is still something there about 4000rpm.

I am suprised that different fuel could make such a difference. I can understand a one-off bit of dirty fuel making your car sluggish, but i didn't realise that different makes could be so..erm..different

I will chuck a bottle of Redex in a bit later on today, that may clear up the rest...

Is that the best stuff to use?..or can someone recommend something?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem

HT leads connected nicely?

Disconnect the battery for a while and reconnect it (this should reset your ECU).

My brothers saxo VTS does the exact same thing as you described. He finds thats its tempramental and swicthing off the engine and restarting fixes it

Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

Yeah i think you have a cylinder down.

Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

@Christian - I am work at the moment so cant really check anything..during my break i will dissconnect the battery for a while..(Will i need the Red Key?)

@Tom - Yes it idles well at between 650-700, not a blip.

I thought if i had a cylnder down it would be more irratic than it is...The engine in general runs very smooth, its just if i put my foot down, its hard to describe, but its like the car is struggling to get upto speed. It's as if it not quite getting enough air or fuel.

Once the car gets to above 80mph it seems fine.

I want to try and get it sorted quickly, as i am getting beaten by BMW drivers, and i cant have that..lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

Hmm.. its not an ignition prob then. Sounds like airflow meter or throttle possition sensor problems.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

Daz, first of all, amd to get better results, you should always pour in the Redex before fuelling up in a very empty tank. In this way the Redex can mix out much better with the fuel.

By the way, it seems that the engine is suffering from fuel starvation. Have you replaced the fuel filter? You dont have to wait for your scheduled service to replace it, although you have to elevate your car from the side to be able to do this.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

Fuel starvation would not affect the idle unless it was REALLY bad in which case it would never get to 60.

Fuel starvation is something that hardly ever happens on injected cars, its either fine or nothing at all.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

When i get home i think it would be a good idea to do the following.

1.Remove & clean+re-gap/replace spark plugs.
Test HT Leads and reconnect ensuring all Leads etc are fitting well.

2.Check clean/Replace Air filter. Checking all breather pipes etc as i go.

3.Check/Replace Fuel filter.

Could i stick in the Redex, and drive about erratically for 15 or so mins to mix it? (If not i may drain most of the fuel out of the tank, add redex, then fill back up)

Also if i buy plugs, i have never seen a pack of 5, do i need 2 sets of 4?..When i had my Sierra 2.8v6 i am sure i had to buy 2 sets of 4?

Is this a good idea?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

1) replace only, never re-gap. The HGT also has no HT leads as such, it uses seperate coils, one mounted ontop of each plug.
2) worth a check but it won't be that
3) won't be that either

Don't bother with redex. Its more likely to dislodge some crap and block your injectors. :)

I'd put money on it being a manifold sensor issue.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

I should just put an FAO Tom post everytime i need help...lol

Thanks to all the other people who responded.

How can i check if it is the manifold sensor, and if it is that, how many buckaroonies will it cost me to get one.

Since my service is nearly due, i will probably replace the sparkplugs, and fuel filter. If the Air filter is not too bad i will just try and blow it out for now, as i am looking for an induction kit.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

Tom, remember I used to complain about erratic idling and over revving as well as under revving at idle?

Last week i had a four in one exhaust manifold installed and it seems to have cured the problem. Must have been some sensor in the exhaust manifold.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

I know nige had alot of problems with the throttle pot on his 155 but he had the ignition light on.

If you lfollow the air pipework from the filter you first get to the airflow meter, wiggle the connections on that, next you get to the throttle body, wobble those connections too.

If you are coming down to the reading meet I'll show you what to do.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Have i got a problem...I'm sure someone can help me out....

I'd doubt it. A tenner says there was another prob, probably a loose wire.

I've had the lambda sensor off and the car runs fine, I've used a variable resistor to fake the lambda readings and the car runs fine.
