GT Turbo conversion, i might just do it!

Hi guys, been a member for a good while now, also a member of www.puntosports.co.uk ,i own 3 modified Fiats at the moment, a Punto 75sx, Punto GT and a Coupe 16vt, so im aware of all the fiat oddities! LOL! Having owned the Coop and GT for just under a year and the 75 for 5 years im after something different! Its time for all 3 to depart soon!

So this is where the Cinquecento comes in! Im thinking of buying a Cinquecento Sporting (off ebay, going for £800 or under on there) and modifying it for track day events! As i know the 1.4 Turbo engine quite well i might buy a crashed GT and convert it into the baby fiat!

I know you Cinque owners convert the 75 engine, so the GT engine shouldnt be that difficult to physically fit into place, the only problem i see is the inlet manifold against the bulkhead! I do own a rather large hammer which might come in useful if i do have problems with it! LOL!

Will also be putting in a roll cage, stripped out interior and maybe dashboard, 2 bucket seats, GT brakes, 14" wheels, and coilovers (if its possible, if its the same setup as a punto then coilovers only at the front???), and the most important thing, running around 170/180bhp with the appropriate modifications!

Hmm, only seen two Cinqs with an Uno Turbo engine and it appartently took ages and a lot of cash with many parts being custom made.

Most Cinq owners upgrade to the 60 engine, 6 more BHP but 33% more torque and the swap is relatively easy as the engines are the same just different capacity.

Nope...its not coil-over strut at the back. could do it, but would be expensive.

If yure ouut to choon the 1242 8v SPi, I thonk the max without N2O or any forced aspiration is around 89-90BHp, retraining the SPi system, but more is possible with more injectors (drools at the thought of 120BHp)...

Turboing is always a good option for 30-40BHp more.

You can fabricate anything you like. If you want coilovers at the rear then it will need turreting so would be better to do at the same time as the cage as you will have to modify the cage to fit around the turrets. I wouldn't entertain the turrets without the cage, and I would add a cross brace to the lower cage mounts whether you are doing the turrets or not. Its like an upper strut brace and really stiffens the shell.

If you are putting a custom dash in you will be able to modify the bulkhead to get the manifolds in.

You will need to find room to triangulate the front lower wishbone mounts, they will distort badly with that much power.

Good luck

Cheers

Thanks for the support guys, im not interested in doing a 1.2 turbo conversion, 120bhp doesnt really appeal to me anymore, it used to when i was first starting out when driving the punto 75sx, but now im regularly driving a 150bhp GT and on weekends a 200bhp Coupe, im used to power, thats why im definately thinking and only thinking of doing the 1.4 GT conversion! And as it wont be my daily drive i can take my time on the conversion!

Thanks for the advice on the rear coilover setup and rollcage!

Does anyone know if there have been any GT conversions on Clubcento at all? I cant even sign up without having to pay, im not going to pay up without knowing that people have already done the converison on the site!

No UK GT Conversions AFAIK, the Uno Turbo Lump is very similar and has been done.

Also remember that the 120bhp 1.2 Cinq could keep with your GT likely.

doing thet to a chinq is bout the same as putting the 16vt in a punto....

youll need custom mounts and custon shafts and gear linkage and custom piping, then custom rad and intercooler...

can be done but will it be worth it??

i somethimes wonder this with my 2ltr, tis really fun to drive and kill bigger cars but sometimes you just wanna drive it without problems.

also youll lose a fair bit of steering lock on the chinq.

would be good if it can be done cheap :)

Has anyone heard of any Cinqs/Puntos/Unos/other small Fiats with a superbike engine conversion?
Me and some mates down the pub came up with the idea of taking a pair of turbocharged 1500cc Hayabusa race engines (at least 300bhp a piece, potential 500bhp in "grenade" tune) and fitting one on the front and one in the back of a Punto, linked via a propshaft to synchronise engine speeds - giving a 4wd, 600-1000bhp Punto with near-perfect weight distribution. Obviously it'd be a hell of a job to engineer and cost a fortune in custom parts and engine rebuilds... but how awesome would it be! :D
But even just dropping a standard 1300cc Busa motor into something like a Punto or a Cinq would result in a bloody rapid car

no torque is the problem mate and also for that spec of engine your looking £10-£15000 per engine.... id get a better car for that.

I have been told that busa is not the option, unless you got ALOT of cash... i think the alternative was an R1, not 100% sure though. And the torque should not be much of an issue as it is not much different from a cinq. I will get more information on it, but i love the idea of a twin engined cinq-busa :D . Would indeed require a lottery win

Greg, a certain person that we both now (Mr Demonfish) has done this already, so ive already started picking his brains about it!

Oh, I'm not talking about a practical or affordable car  just one that, if it were ever built, would out-accelerate just about anything, and if it looked from the outside like just a standard low-spec Punto, so much the better  obviously it'd only manage a few hundred miles between rebuilds/explosions! ;)
