Hi guys,

Just wondered if you had any advice regarding a problem i'm having with my t-jet. Whenever i hard lock to the left and right i get a faint grinding noise, this grinding seems to be worse if i reverse hard locking to the left/right. I wondered what you guys think it could be???

I have checked round the wheels why they are on full lock to make sure they arent catching on anything, it has been in the garage already and they said my rear break discs were to close to the calipers and i had gravel in between them, they corrected this but the problem is still there. I have had a look on the forum and people have said it may need a new column or possibly the engine is not properly aligned on engine mounts hence pulling on one of the drive shafts. I woundered what you guys think as i want to get it back in the garage but would like to go there with a bit of know how so to speak.

Cheers for any advice on this.

I had this problem after having the drop links replaced. I took the car back to fiat who re-seated the cover plate behind the break disk as this was the cause of te grinding. Since you havent had any work done it might not be the cause but maybe worth asking your garage to check them.

If you jack the front up and try to spin the wheels on full lock then you'll know if its this - you can always just get a screwdriver to the plates to bend them back - a stone might have hit it and moved it slightly...

I think in this case it might be best taking it to garage for checking, its not easy trying to diagnose a fault without seeing (or hearing) the car, could be column, top mounts, rack etc

Had this problem twice. Both times it was the top suspension mount bearings. Seems to be a common problem.
Had a few bearings replaced eg wheel bearings and tension bearings. Who supplies Fiat with bearings? Time they found another supplier.

If it is Hydraulic PS, then this exact problem can happen because of a lower fluid level. I am actually having that problem now in my GP due to a leaky steering box. The grinding noise comes from the PS pump. If it is electronic PS, then no idea.

my bet is going on it being the strut top bearings, easy job to change and cost £17.50 each from a dealers, mine were making a terrible sound, both of them were completely goosed, fitted new ones and the full front end seems much more solid, no rattles clonks or grinds at all
