Looked at both of those Mareas (loving the idea of the Paramedic vehicle) but just can't believe how much they want for them. That 105JTD is up for more than twice what it's worth!

Audi A2 1.4tdi - Expensive but cheap to run
Corsa 1.3cdti - Cheap to buy and even cheaper to run, but you'll end up a chav
Clio 1.5d - Cheap to buy Cheap to run but you'll end up gay
Focus 1.6tdci - Relatively cheap to buy and super cheap to run, good all rounder.
Golf Mk4 130Tdi - Now cheap to buy and cheap to run. If you can find one with less than ~70kish and one female owner then definately worth the money. Otherwise thrashed by people like myself and Sheario.
Ford Fiesta 1.4tdci - See focus but a you'll end up with a comb-over.

by runabout do you mean something with an engine so small that you **** yourself everytime you overtake or just something that'll give 40+mpg?

Have a number of options really. The 1.6 diesel focus looks a good choice but I'm tempted to bank the cash and buy a £300 banger and run it into the ground. Having Shabash! as a back up makes that feasible.
To be fair though, ideally I would like something that is comfortable on the motorway, get's 40+ mpg and is sub £200 a year to tax, max insurance group 10. Age, mileage and price are secondary.

I'd say go for a £300 runabout, with the way things are looking on the economic front (doom and gloom hat on) it's gotta be the smart decision. Granted I'm looking at bangers too atm (my bike has pushed my budget southwards) and it seems you really can get a lot of car for not much these days. Especially when you consider the price of scrap at the moment too! ;)

Oz - there is a Pug 205 1.8turbo diesel up the road, bit of rust bt 4 new tyres, 110k, 12month mot and tax... up for £600 but I think £450-500 might buy it!!!

Ive just got a Citroen C2 GT and i love it, build quality is actually not that bad either. its a 1.6 group 6 insurance 9sec 0-60 £140 for 12 months tax really comfy on long journeys and returns 42mpg combined. Great little cars, can be picked up for around £3500 and also have a 2 year 20000 mile service interval

thats alota wedge for the pug Tommy... im selling both the alfa and the saab for that price!

The Saab, although not quite as frugal as you were after would munch the miles until the cows come home (I had a very enthuiastic drive to cornwall in her and got mid 30s mpg and a big smile plus no back ache...)

Alfa... well, its cheap...
