General Glass vs solid roof

So there you go... if someone wants to pay an extra 2 grand for heated mirrors all because its called a 'Lounge' (euurrrgh!) I feel sorry for them!

Erm, for the £1400 extra you pay for a Lounge you get alloys, Blue&Me, leather wheel, chrome, rear head restraints, split fold rear seat, glass roof, body coloured mirrors and the smoking kit. Adding all those extra gubbins to a Pop adds £1910 to the price.

If the sport doesn't suit your needs and the idea of having lounge written somewhere on the car disgusts you so much then don't buy one, but it'd be nice if you didn't insinuate that people were fools for buying a lounge.

Well my apologies if it sounded bad, I'm not saying that at all. If you want a glass roof you should buy a Lounge, no question! If not its a different matter... that's all. I was joking about the word Lounge.

I am talking about if you're selling it on... I'm having trouble understanding how all the 'extras' could be valueless when these seem to be the very things that make the Lounge more valueable than the Pop in the first place. Sorry – I'm new to this.

The thing is your opinion is subjective. And if you ask anyone else then their opinion is too. I say go for whatever you like/need/want but bear in mind that if you do ask others opinions then it will be mainly based on their experiences/likes/needs/wants. And the thing is that most people on here are very passionate about their 500's (some have names and are called babies) and as well as justifying their own tastes they can also be really, really helpful. I won't get my sport for another month or so but I already know so much about it -I've even read the manual pdf a couple of times (geek is my middle name)

I didn't go for the lounge because the extra chrome and the fixed glass roof didn't do it for me (although I think it goes well with the blues, greys and of course, yeye green). When I sat in a lounge it just felt like the roof should be openable and it ended up making me feel claustrophobic (which I know the solid roof should in theory do more so). I think it stems from staying up late once when I was around ten and watching an Alfred Hitchcock film -or it could've been Tales of the unexpected. Anyway, a group of beautiful people dived into a pool for a leisurely swim. But then the bad guy (who was watching them remotely) pressed a button and a glass sheet slid over the pool. The sight of the people trying to resurface and thrashing against the glass was a bit too much for me. Regression therapy over for the day.

So, take in everyone else's opinions if you like but ultimately go for whatever's going to be good for you. 500 meets would be rubbish (i guess) if all the cars were the same. Choose well Grasshopper

Would you feel comfortable driving around in a car which didn't have that bar there? I wouldn't.....

Well... If a car has been designed on the outside to look like it has a continuous sheet of glass... I'd like to think it's the same on the inside.

Having said that, it probably wouldn't be the safest :shakehead:

Thanks, I think its great that people are passionate about their 500's and I wasn't dissing anybody's choice – quite the reverse in fact. I'm questioning the idea that second hand the additions are all valueless. If people want air con or leather seats on a car surely they'll pay extra for them even if its 'only' a Pop??? As you say – people on here are very very helpful and I am upset to think anyone mistakenly feels I'm insulting their choices.

I wasn't upset by your comments! (though I guess I'm on your side of the fence...) Don't worry about it. And I'd be inclined to agree with you, they are bound to add some value... just not as much as if it was a lounge.

Yes – that's what makes it so hard to choose – with the 500 there are no 'wrong' choices! Glass or no glass? – what a lovely dilemma to have!

It's a fact though that a pop will only ever be worth pop money. Of course options add value, but speccing up a pop to lounge spec will always result in a car that costs more and in the future is worth less.

I suppose I'm just annoyed that my car will be worth less, when it won't be much different. I'll just have to accept it's a fact. Its too late for me to change anything now even if I wanted to!

We all look for different things when we buy - this is why i bought a pop.

Alloys - already had a nice set

Blue & me - not interested in talking to anybody on the phone when i'm in the car - Just me, the car and my music - the phone is definitly off.

Leather wheel - a bugger to clean.

Chrome - Like the plain look

Rear head restraints - no one goes in the back and they're a pain when dropping the seats.

Split fold rear seats - i dont have anyone in the back so no point.

Glass roof - i'm way too tall - and prefer feel of more head room the solid gives.(not saying it gives more but to a tall person it feels roomier)

Body coloured mirrors - because i was going for the 1965 abarth look - White, red stripe and swept back mirrors - had to be black.


Smoking kit - dont smoke and the socket is permanent home to one of those plug in MP4 players.

Thats why i saved a bucket load of cash and am more that happy with my car

Plus, imagine getting a crack in the windscreen...The entire thing would have to be replaced. I sat in a Vauxhall once that had a panoramic roof thingy and while it was nice it wasn't any better than the way the 500 does it really.

I know on paper I've done a slightly mad thing. Can't say I wasn't told. But I prefer the car this way – I like to be different! I'll just have to make sure I somehow earn enough to keep it!

To be practical, it will only be if you trade your car in at a garage that the value will be based on Pop, Lounge or Sport specification as that will be the reference that a car sales person will look for in Glass' guide.

Selling privately you will be able to realise a higher price by pointing out the options that have been fitted over and above the standard configuration.

When I bought secondhand cars I always went to look at the higher spec ones first and if I was happy with the condition and the price being asked I never bothered to even view the others.

Plus, how do you price the enjoyment that you get from your choices over the next few years?

In case this isn't completely clear – I was saying second hand if you had two cars identical (except for, say, heated mirrors), you can't say one is worth 2 grand more just because its called a Lounge, (or Sport for that matter).

Except apparently you can, so I stand corrected!!
