Giving blood.

Giving blood.

heehee the grand satire that is the NHS strikes again.

Yeah, one of the girls i went with got turned down cus of that, funny they don't ask you if they grazed your knee in the past 6 months though...

Hang on, they take just less than a pint right? A body has approximately 8 pints in total. A pint is 0.55litres approx, and I assume the mass of blood is approx. the same as water, hence they only remove approx 0.5 litres = 0.5kg = approx 1% (all done in head so don't moan I am not being accurate) - 8 pints = about 4 litres day, so even then, 4kg of 45kg is less than 10% of body mass....

Maybe they said 1.3% is what I am saying?

You're not allowed a piercing in the last 12 months :(

And i agree, they dont ask u if you've cut yourself. Its stupid :)

Maybe the nurse was a bitter old hag who didn't want our blood cuz we offended her in some way... silly peoples. Maybe its 13% of your total blood mass? meh.

The questions they ask bout your sex life are quite probing also...I think its just some kinky government excersise.

That could be true.....maybe you're a bit short of the stuff like Dawn.

This is my thoughts on the matter, it stinks I know but, well, it's how I feel:
I am deadly scared that if I gave blood they would come back to me a week later "Hello, is that Paul?" "yes" "could you go to see your doctor immediately please" at which point I get told I have 10 minutes to live....

The blood tests they do only take 5 minutes- you wouldn't get a whole week of blissful ignorance.

But they might find out I have something awful at a later point, I like being blissfully ignorant right now, I have enough to think about :(

It's an awful way to think about it but it's how I do feel.

You just summed up my last friday :(

Had my blood taken for routine 6 monthly thyroid test (before skeggy) and cos i said was feeling realy tired he asked for a couple of other tests to be done.

When i rang for results i was told my doc wanted to see me.

Went in on friday morn to be told ive got aenemia and pernicious aenemia :(
So on iron for now for the aenemia and vitamin B12 injections for life for the PA :( came home and read up on the net about what it was cos ive never heard of it to find out if you dont have ur injections you die  so although i dont like needles i like the alternative less :(

I've given blood heaps of times now and it's not scary at all, everyone was very friendly and patient :). OK so it hurt a bit and took a while but if I were lying somewhere bleeding to death I know I would want some blood so it's only fair to give something back. At the end of the day if you're healthy you can produce more and if you're not you can't donate anyway. I would encourage anyone thinking about it but a bit unsure/ scared to go along and get it over with as you never know when you're going to need someone to do the same for you :).

I thought you had to be 18 to give blood - 'cos I've been waiting to!
Does anyone know the exact rules with regard to piercings and tatoos if you wanna give blood??
Apparently you can't donate for a long time after a tatoo and I want one of them once I'm 18 - but, for personal reasons, wanna make sure I'm still allowed to after the tat. Plus all my piercings are over a year old - so that shouldn't pose a problem right?
Cheers,
Matt

Piercings arent a problem once they're a year old unless you've had them done in a foreign county and i think they're a little more fussy.

I think the same rule applys with tattoos, have to wait a year, thought im not definate on this as i dont have a tattoo.

you can give blood at 17 as long as you are in good health and weight.

Am I right in thinking they lowered the age 3 years ago or so? I was under the impression until a couple of years ago it was 18.

yeah it had always been 18 until a couple of years ago and when they changed it to 17 they brought in other restrictions too.

In the form I filled out last week it was 6 months for piercings etc.
