Need to pick your knowledgeable brains and this has probably been covered lots of times but here goes……….
Oil consumption combined with smoke šŸ™ˆ
Cars only done 68k…….was running fine for ages.
Started with an engine flush and a service, filters, fresh oil, you know the score, still running fine but using oil.
New sump as the seal was leaky.
I’ve given the EGR and the DPF a tickle 😜
Still smoking, not as bad but still there.
Replaced the turbo as mine was whistling, rapid but whistling.
Still smoking and using oil.
Runs dodgy on tickover and start up, again with smoke.
Threw it up the motorway earlier in the week, ran like a dream! Thought I’d done it a favour until the same issues the morning after.
This little van is driving me crazy. It’s a perfect little workhorse when it’s good but a complete headache when it’s not.
This sounds like a rant, which it isn’t (it is) so apologies for lack of manners in advance.
Anyone have an inkling? Similar experience?
Rings? Stem seals?
I Thankyou please
Steve

I assume you are running a 1.3 mj diesel? I agree with the engine flush, I do it with all my vehicles, although others have differing opinions.:)
I again assume 5/30 good quality oil suitable for DPF etc. You could try a 5/40 but first I would see how much "blow by" you get on opening the oil filler cap when engine idling warm, if notably "drumming" it will indicate piston/bore wear which although not expected at under 70k it is a small diesel working hard with probably a five speed gearbox? I have a 2014 Vauxhall Combo 1.3 with around 122k, it pulls well but I try to keep it around 60mph in top gear as they are low geared to pull the weight which means high speed equals high revs. I have a 2010 Fiat Doblo 1.6 with the 6 speed gearbox and it is a much more relaxed drive.
Apart from what I mentioned you could check the breather pipe that feeds in before the turbo to make sure it isn't pushing oil in to burn, also if that is OK check your new turbo as if bearings poor it will pump oil into the intercooler and inlet manifold pipe.
By the way if DPF was blocked that would be the cause of turbo failure and higher oil consumption.
Incidentally if white smoke on cold start apart from faulty heater plugs, it can be low compression due to the piston wear.
Another test is to check the oil doesn't smell strongly of diesel, if injectors are worn or if engine has been trying to do Regens due to blocked DPF then diesel will dilute the oil causing extra smoke, although the side effect is the oil level doesn't drop so much, just gets thinned down so it doesn't do it's job.;)
People often suggest valve stem oil seals, but I think that is clutching at straws as in over 50 years in motor trade I have never seen that as cure. You could possible argue it if the only time the engine smoked was running down hill on the over run with foot off the accelerator and then booting it at the bottom of the hill, if doing that has sucked some oil in.
There is a "Leak Test" that may show if piston wear is the cause, but it is a bit time consuming and requires some suitable equipment.
Sorry if all this sounds a bit long winded, if the vehicle was in front of me I would undo the filler cap and give a verdict in seconds.;)

Hey Mike, thanks for your ā€œlong windedā€ reply…….nothing better than a good read.
Yeah it’s the 1.3 multi-problem 🤣
I replaced the turbo as I thought this was at fault, it was a bit noisey, like I said, pulled like a train and zipped along nicely……..but was concerned it was the turbo pushing oil through so replaced it.
Couldn’t possibly be a DPF issue 😜
Couldn’t possibly be anything to do with the EGR either 😜
The orange triangle also comes on first start but goes off on second start of the day, maybe related, maybe not
I have 3 other vehicles, one 5 times older than my Fiorino is and no such issues to mention.

So possibly piston/bore wear, in the past it would be a hone the bores and a set of piston rings as a cheap fix, but nothing simple these days.:(

I suspected similar. Strange thing is, the day I replaced the turbo everything was fine……ran like a new van and when it was upto temp was quiet and smooth on tickover, actually thought the stop start had kicked in a few times 🤣
Seems to be a cold/warm up intermittent thing.
What a ball ache.
I’m still a fan of my van, don’t get me wrong, just arrrggghhhhhh 😔

Actually on the Vauxhall version once it is warmed up the engine is a lot quieter as the pistons expand etc.
That is why I always make sure my vehicles thermostats work and the temp gets up to normal 90 Degrees C quickly.

Don't know the system fitted to your motor but make sure any valves are opening and closing
the flushing oil could circulated any crud it has loosened and gum a valve up, at less than 70k
I would expect the engine to be basically ok.

I thought the same mate……..I bought it for the low mileage and look where that’s gotten me lol

Could give it another flush I suppose, would help top the oil level up a bit more too 🤪

When it comes out the oil filler that is too much.;) We had a petrol customer do that in an old Morris 1000, she drove onto the forecourt smoking like hell. When questioned she thought you topped it up till you could see it in the rocker cover!!!

Oh dear, I’m not that bad but I’ve had some close calls in the passed

Can you read the error codes, I don't use MES like many on Forum but Maxiecu Scan tool for Fiats on Windows platform, but any good Fiat specific would help.
Looking at your LCD display reminds me at some point I need to take speedo out and see what is wrong with that as it has gone blank, it started being intermittant, but now nothing.
I see on online you can buy a new display, but not a 5 minute job and may not be the cause, so I will have to find some enthusiasm. The one on my Vauxhall works fine, but the spares Doblo one doesn't work either so I can't rob that one, although in fairness it has repaid the £280 I bought it for many times over in parts donation.
It reminded me of back in the 1970s I worked for a Wartburg Dealership and the boss took one back in part exchange that wasn't good enough to retail. Over a period of time the stores manager used to get the workshop to remove parts so he could resell them. At the time a brand new Wartburg was selling for well under £1000, the Stores manager sold the parts for over £2000!:)

I haven’t got any codes mate sadly (I know, imagine yourself with no codes on your car and yet your still worried lol)
I’ve used my mates snap-on code reader, fully up-to-date software n that but comes up with nothing.
It did once say check DRLs which my van doesn’t have lol.
If I could scream over text you’d all be deaf by now

Strange Snap On didn't report anything when you have the yellow triangle etc.
