Grande Punto gears are stiff

Hello today I was driving and it was really stiff to change my gears I pulled up I tried to put it in reverse but it was just crunching and not going in then I tried first it wasn't crunching but it wouldn't go in the gear so I turned my engine off and on and tried again and it worked what could this be and how much will it cost?

If it crunches going into gear,it's usually because the clutch in not releasing fully. Usually Either air in slave cylinder or fingers broke on clutch. Turn engine off,put it in reverse and start the engine with foot on clutch. How far do you lift you foot off before car sets off,usual amount or a lot closer to the floor?

My mj does this..

I KNOW The engine mount is shot..

It doesnt help..
AND the clutch pedal bites very low..just off carpet.

Mine crunches when warm.. so I drive into parking spaces..then select reverse BEFORE starting engine..

What engine is yours? paigeb

My tjet reverse crunches about 70% of the time, I always select 2nd then go to reverse, ofcourse at a standstill. Stops any grinding due to there being synchromesh between the gears

Hi Charlie,

I'm surprised You haven't investigated further about WHY your clutch's bitting so low... "Grinding" of gearboxes, specially with un-syncronized gears is clearly the sign of the gears still being in rotation; since our GPs have hydraulic clutch actuator the only reason would be air in the circuit OR broken clutch diaphragm. One need to also allow enough time to the GB inner shafts to stop rotating; pretty obvious but people nowadays seem to easy forget the very basics ... Be gentle with them and the cars will reward you, soon or later ;-)

Judging by other things around car..
My suspicion is just wear and tear..
With a dash of neglect.

But at 70mpg against the old cars 50mpg.

It has already paid for some maintenance..

WELL..
the dog bone failure is pretty evident.. but the build sequence means it's really awkward to swap, ( fitted as engine sub-assembly - exhaust now in way..)

so I spoke to a maintenance place across the road,

oil change =£80 , changing dog-bone another = £20 , as it's already up at the correct height

I'll soon know if that's fixed a fair few of the "issues".
