Hi

I have a 2013 500S 1.2 and have a noise (whirring/grinding) which seems to be gearbox linked, it's particularly noticable in 1st and 2nd and a bit in 3rd. Linked to speed/revs. It seems to be there regardless of where the clutch is in or out however goes completely when not in gear.

Anyone any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks

Hi If you say the noise goes when the car is not in gear i take it you mean when its in neutral!?.
If the noise reappears when you engage a gear 1st /2nd / 3rd ect then thats because the gearbox main-shaft and layshaft are then turning! which kinda suggests that either a gear, a bearing, or a shaft itself might be worn damaged or in some way failing!.
Its more noticeable in the lower gears such as 1st or 21nd because the shafts are turning faster!.

HOWEVER!

Its always worth dropping the old gearbox oil to check its condition!- If its dirty /thin, or watery it may never have been changed! so if your lucky a re-fill with brand new oil up to the correct level MIGHT just cure your problem? if not then it does suggest more serious gearbox damage which will require further investigation! .
To be honest if the car is over 10 years old repair is generally uneconomic! and the best way to go is a used box from a good and trusted supplier( circa £400) and if you cant fit it yourself then a good mobile mechanic would charge about the same to fit it for you!
either way not cheap im afraid!.
best of luck sorting it!.
