Hi

I have gearbox oil leaking for the bell housing on my Fiat Punto MkII 1.9 JTD. Doing some research it appears to be probably the input shaft oil seal. I understand I need to change this and also the input bearing too.

Unfortunately I have the mechanical expertise of a goat and will need to take it to a professional.

I live in the Salisbury / Southampton area, does any one recommend any good places? I'm willing to travel further too. Not sure about taking it to a Fiat main dealer after reading various comments about them!

Also does anyone have a rough idea of the price to have this work done?

Cheers in advance! Rich

Re: Punto mk1 problem with electronics

Is it gearbox oil or engine oil, if its the gearbox seal its a good idea to get the input bearing changed to, best priced place will be a local garage with a good reputation not kwick sh*t or a main dealer,

If Seal has failed - bearing failure will not be far behind

Also Factor in the cost of a new clutch - as it may forwell have fowled it, but not slipping yet

Ebay is a good place to look - or contact a local gearbox company - ask if they can get you the bearing and seal for a reasonable price

Check the garages section of the forum here: https://www.fiatforum.com/garages/

They are common standard sized bearings and not costly. When the gearbox is stripped, take the old bearings to any engineering/bearings factor who will sell you new bearings of the same size.

Unless you know its new, replace the clutch anyway as it will be well worn. If its new be absolutely sure its not contaminated with oil. If in doubt, replace it because an oily clutch will never work smoothly.

Thanks for the replies guys, I took it to a local garage who are going to replace the clutch and also recon the gearbox as it has been a little winey in 4th too. They said it would be a seal causing the leak and that they will change the bearings too.

They also said my fly wheel was very worn and needs changing, would the above issues have caused this too? I don't rag the car but could have been previous owner...

Cheers

Rich
