Hi All,

My car has started making some strange whining noises, eg when driving at 40mph+ it makes a strange whining noise, the faster you get the more high pitched it goes.

It went to the garage this morning , they said its gearbox bearings.

However when driving if I dip the clutch or take it out of gear totally, the same noise is still there and making the noise, When the clutch is dipped or out of gear will the gearbox bearings still make noise?

It seems to be linked to the rotation of the wheels rather than gearbox

Is my logic right here?

Even if it's in neutral/ clutch pressed a big part of the gearbox will still rotate, because it's driven by the car's momentum ( the wheels rotate=> the CV rotate=> the differential rotates=> one of the shafts in the gearbox rotates); i believe it's actually the shaft with the problem bearings.
Another shaft rotates through the clutch when released.

Although.. I think that pressing the clutch should influence the noise; change the pitch.
