they don't look correctly assembled although it cold just be the angle of the photo

but its the weight of the car that holds them in place And the top hats only come into play when the wheel is off the ground

There should be a gap. thought it was about a cm but will check tomorrow

It as if the piston rod nut(s) in your pics are upside down with the central sleeve upwards These sleeves need to face the floor and locate the spring top seat centrally. Upside down the height of the sleeved part of the nut will increase the gap as shown. If you undo the strut top nut and remove the cupped top plate, the top of the big nut should be flat and have no raised centre sleeve visible. This sleeve locates the spring top place centrally not the top cup.

You can undo these with the car on the ground if you put spring compressors on first to prevent the springs extending as you do so and change the nuts round, although its not much more work to remove completely and refit on the bench.

Don't over tighten or the steering will be tight should be 48lb/ft which is pretty firm but not as much as a wheel nut.

The photo shows the gap on my 2006 1.2 Panda - and I have had no trouble with the front suspension in the life of the car

You are talking about galvanised nut ?

Looking from above under the bonnet - from the top you have the strut top nut often galv nyloc thenthe dished washer that is poss too far up, then the big nut that holds the top mount on the strut rod. Its this one that should look flat not stepped when viewed from the top.

The gap on my 1.2 between the dish and the bodywork is just over 10mm.
