The fuel tank would generally only leak if something had hit it.

I wouldnt try re-sealing a fuel tank, and since I've never encountered a damaged fuel tank I would imagin they wouldnt cost much from a wreckers yard. Or find someone on the forum who has a parts uno and ask for their tank. There are two types of tank (plastic and metal) I would recommend getting the same kind of tank as you have because the fuel sender unit is different and this part does wear out.

The fuel tank is held in with three bolts. The handbrake cable is attached to the tank so you need to disconnect this. Then disconnect the two fuel lines (under a plastic cover under the rear seats. Then remove the filler hoses. There are a couple of plastic clips these should give way once everything else is disconnected, if not just pull downwards on the tank.

If you were in NZ I could help as I have a couple of fuel tanks under my house.

James, I presume Kev id in the UK ;)

Tanks here also rust through (n). Emma's Seicento has a recall for a new fuel tank as they can rust a little too fast.

I'd replace the tank! don't try and weld it or Boooooommmm :bang:.

They come up on Ebay new but there are a number of types depending on which Uno uou have ;) (more than 2).

Cheers,
Lewis.

OK - are we talking about a plastic tank or a steel tank?
I gather that the Mk2 Uno ('89-) has a steel tank. The Mk1 Uno after '86 has a plastic tank.

Regardless, petrol tends to 'seep' really well, so a leak on the top can look like a leak from the side. I would start by looking under the back seat (remove the plastic cover) and re-seal the top fitting to the tank. That's where my Uno Turbo's fuel tank leaked - at the large plastic nut that unscrews.

I've never seen a plastic tank, but that's not to say they don't exist :).

Which Uno do you have?

I think there are 4 main types of metal tank, depending on your Uno..

Petrol Carb, (most UK Unos before Aug 1992) with mechanical pump,
Petrol injection (non turbo) (most UK Unos after Aug 1992) with in tank electric fuel pump,
Turbo IE with out of tank electric fuel pump,
Diesel (don't know suspect mechanical pump).

Get one off an Uno with similar fuel delivery if you can find one.

I tried to buy a new tank for the misses uno turbo (maindealer wanted £180) so i bought a diesel (brand new non oe) for £60 and soldered a plate over an extra square hole, they are exactly the same apart from that, then put a pair of rubber gloves on on smothered it in grease as mine had rusted on top and at the seams, 4-5 years on and still looks brand new, i would check all pipes and jubilee clips before writing off the old tank Ant!
