Had a search thro the site after experiencing my drivers wiper packing in on the way home from work.
Similar diagnosis that others experienced, but in my car it had nothing to do with the linkage.
Simply a case of the wiper arm aging. the spring starts to weaken and the pin hing at the base of the arms starts to get some play in it. this leads to the wiper blade not lying on the windscreen properly. the splines on the arm that mate with the spindle had also worn flat.
bought a new arm, (robbed by fiat for £22.01, he let me of with the penny - i should bloody think so) and it seems to be ok.
