Hi

My local garages has told me that I have a duff front shock absorber.
I realise that hey have to be replaced in pairs but, is there any other bits that should be perhaps replaced at the same time?

Best to do the springs at the same time, you should only pay for parts as the springs need removed anyway and it's a bit of a dangerous job to do because of the tension the springs are under.....if you can get them to do it at a good price then go for it.

May want to consider top mounts as well depending on how old they are / what condition they are in.

Gas are supposed to be superior to oil damped, but I find the quality of manufacture(r) makes as much, if not more, difference. I went with Bilstein B4 type which are oil damped and I've been very happy with them.

I also agree with T14086 - get someone else to do the spring removal and refit from the struts. It's a scary job  and the compressors can easily slip :eek::eek:. They're difficult to get hooked onto the Mutlis' springs in a position that allows you to compress them sufficiently for removal. You could remove the strut assemblies yourself, take them to a garage to have the springs switched over, then go back home and refit them.
