Hi all, looking for a few words of wisdom. Decided to add some additional heat protection to the distributor by way of an exhaust shield which was missing. Duly ordered from Ricambi. Now here's the rub, I was expecting a couple of bolt holes in the shelf to the right of the distributor to attach the Exhaust shield and there are none

Could anyone confirm my suspicions that in a previous life the lip was sufficiently rusted away that it has been cut away hence why no existing heat shield. If so looks like I will be fashioning some additional bars to attach the exhaust shield to newly drilled holes.

Equally if I am approaching this wrongly, happy to be corrected, 🤣 Would be nice if anyone has any photos of what the 'shelf' looks like

Many Thanks again

Barry

I agree, the 'lip' has definately been cut back---either because it was rusty or because a 'sports' exhaust was fitted at some time, and the 'lip'had to be cut back to allow fitment. There is very little load on the shield, so you could do as I have done, attach it with 3 large self-tapping screws. I used the "hex-head" style of self-tapper (much easier to do up tight with a spanner or socket) and 'speed-nuts' I used the largest size I could get (I think that it was called '14'gauge) and, to date, the shield has never fallen off. Work out on 'the lip' where you want to screw into, and then transfere that to the shield. then drill the shield and use the shield as your template for drilling 'the lip'.

Phew - thanks guys I thought I was losing it, ahhh the wonders of no previous history of the car to hand.

Plan 2 then 😀 I will see where it best lines up. As the ' chop' has been severe using, whats left as anchor points will move the shield to far away from the distributor so will likely extend out from underneath the shelf with some flat bar to anchor to and finish off with some s/s bolts

Thanks again, so grateful for the quick replies

Barry
