Fish tank?

Fish tank?

theres a much faster way of doing that... you have a filter in your other tank? clean it in the new tank.. let the filter in that suck up all the muck and mess..
instant started tank

been doing that trick for years ;)

(y)

I only ever do that if I am desperate, and have had the odd problem with fungal infections in the fish. Whilst that will condition the filter and water it doesn't allow the other stuff in the tank to leak chemicals / bacteria into the water. The spares in this tank have been sat in a dark damp shed for a while.

Filter in big tank is way too silted up for that, I'd poison the smaller tank straight away. the little tank has 100% water from the big tank so that's a good start. Tomorrow I'll add a tiny amount of fish food to get the filter bacteria going. :) I'd rather wait a week or so and do another small water change than infect the fish.

we had a tank with amonnia and nitrates levels off the scale, only had one fish in it, we introduced quareneened fish we saved about 6 out of 12. after we realised the water was toxic

corys dont really need hiding places.. there the one fish you buy that are active, do a good job cleaning the tank and dont hide ;)

When I said it was dirty I jut meant the rest of the gravel.

Most weekends I used a syphon to clean the gravel, but obviously with ornaments there etc I couldnt get it all. Suppose I could have moved them but you know ;)

Wouldnt mind seeing other people's tanks too if anyone wants to put some pics up :D

Here's the two I've got here up and running, I've got a small 12" plastic tank in the garage doing nothing and a large bowl in the shed. At my parents I've got a 3' tank, 2' tank and a small 15" tank - all up and running under the care of my step dad. I moved in between jobs and locations and not all the fish tanks made it out. My step dad loves them, the only pets he's allowed, which considering he was a farmer for most of his life I think is a bit harsh.

This is the main centre piece in the living room. There's about 40 Kribs a pleco and a Albino Corydora, I've lost a fair few fish from this tank over the last 6 month due to the Kribs :( so going to split them between make and female, and fingers crossed find a shop or someone who wants to take some off my hands.

I need to re bury the air line, but the plec keeps digging it up :bang: the heater was hidden by plants but the plec didn't like those there either.

This is my smaller tank on the other side of the living room, to add balance ;) good job SWMBO isn't here I'd have no chance :D Got it up and running last night the glass is scratched to hell and I should probably at least straighten the filter and lower the heater, also need to adjust filter to provide aeration.

thats a lot of fish for a 125l tank lmao. 40 cribs.. heh bet thats fun to sit and look at.

tank liks like a Juwel Rio125. or a fluval roma 125..

shame the little one is scratched. you not done the old trick of turning the tank around?

i need to get a video of the big tank we have...

I have no idea what the make of the tank is, was bought new but 2nd hand so I could leave some tanks at home with my step dad - he bought it LOL!

I know way too many fish but they keep breeding :( hence needing to split the males and females. Since moving here they've had a new batch of fry more or less every three months and they keep living! The plants help to keep the water balance right, and IMHO filter is overkill for a tank this size, plenty of bubbles so it's fine except from a crowding point of view.

The little one is scratched on all sides inside and out, it was an ex-gf's that her mum picked up at a car boot sale, I cleaned it up sprayed the plastic edging silver and did the lid, but that keeps falling apart, when I moved in here the black lid was in the shed with an exact same tank - but the bottom piece of glass was broken. I kept the lid for this tank, and the broken tank is a mini spray booth in the back garden

tank looks brill mate!

just got some new fish today:

went for 6 red-eye tetras and 2 gorydoras (think thats it) catfish

also added a new tall ornamanet where my airstone will sit under, just need to add when the sand has settled again.

@jenks69 you can never over do filtration mate.. you can over aerate though so be careful.
my 120L has a filter that achieves a 2200L/h turn over rate fitted with 2x 9W UV clarifiers. the filter is rated for tanks up to 1500 liters! (our 5 footer has 2 of these on it)
the one thing with big filters is flow. 2200L is ok in my 120L tank the gold fish dont seem to mind it but if you had something like a tank full of female fighters you want a really slow turn over.

@sammclean23 feed the flake food first. then while the mid and top swimmers gorge themselves on the flake drop in the cat fish pellets ;)

tbh i thought it was the light.. i have a pinkish tube i use when my plants are looking a little sad. a redish light really helps under water plant growth. try and stay clear of blue ones as its the colour blue that algae loves.

i have quite low colour temperature lighting in both my tanks. really helps keep the algae at bay.
and another note, fluorescent tubes only really last 12 months.. 2 years at max before they start degrading and making naff light. a UV clarifier tube only lasts 6 months.. 12 at max! something to look into if you get insane algae..

dragonman: thanks for the advice but that's exactly what i did :( it seems the pellets were more interesting lol. will try again in about 3 minutes ;)

my tank comes with a blue light for 'chilled out' effect

EDIT: just fed some tropical flakes and dropped the pellets in, the catfish got them but the second the flakes ran out they all went to the pellets. I.e. guppies, cherry barbs, white clouds, red-eye tetra.

And they are eating the pellets, they arent just sniffing around so to speak.

Theyre still on it now 5 mins after feed.

One last thing, bubbles have stopped from the filter, is that the impeller?

chrisUK: looks good!! whats that fish you have in there?

the way how i would feed then is feed flake first... keep adding bits in at a time untill the fish start to leave the flake. then when they have taken there fill drop a few pellets in.

the bubbles on the PF2 filter work on a venturi effect, make sure the switch type thing on the very top of the filter is in the right position and just sticking out the top of the water. also if the filter is becomeing clogged and the flow rate is reduced this can also stop the bubbles.

heh as i always have both bulbs on at the same time, both the light bulbs in my tank died a while ago and i replaced them with standard house type screw fit CFL bulbs. the plant growth and lack of algae in my tank proves that the lighting isnt half bad! it the only tank that is not on a timer, it normally gets turned on at around 12 noon and turned off at stupid o'clock in the morning when i go to bed

both your tanks look really good. my tank was easy to get how i wanted. i let it grow massively and then cut some of it back and replanted the offcuts. it gives it that wild/natural look.

cheers dragonman

yeah its happened before with the bubbles, I simply cleaned the impeller. However this time, even after a clean, the venturi system wont work...well only ever so slightly and even then is touch and go.

ill try the feeding thing tonight!

this thread needs a thanks button :(

Oh yeah, when i went to the fish place, I asked a guy about red tail sharks. He said they would be fine in my tank. I asked another guy there, all he did was show me a fully grown one and say "what do you think" lol.

seriously there is so much conflict with advice on fish keeping

Ultimately it comes down to what works for you. Trial and error is often the only way to find out. No two tanks will ever be the same, differant water quality, different fish, different temprements of the same breed of fish. I've got books at home that directly conflict with each others advice :( I've been refused fish in various shops due to other tank mates being a potential problem, and in other shops they've said yep they'll be fine!

yes this is true. some places do try some just want to make the sale. in my experience all i can tell you is, if theres the slightest risk, dont chance it.

some fish are good with others, some are not. some may be fine in one tank, yet in another tank they can be totally different.

fish in a way are a lot like people. some are grumpy, some are nice all individual. just because you buy a fish thats known to be aggressive doesn't mean it will be aggressive in every tank it goes in to.

the red tail shark is a fine example, in my brothers 125l tank it was a bugger (when he had one). the same fish when it was put in my tank it was fine even though all the fish were smaller as it was in my 45l tank temporary for a few weeks. now its in my mums big tank and it never seems to hurt anything.

when its uploaded heres a video to our really big tank:

yeah i know what you both mean

pets at home declined a purchase, whereas wentworth garden centre didnt even ask the size of my tank.

that tank looks good mate, what's the big fish? oh and the 'worm like' one?

which air pump you running btw, iv got a tetra whisper and so far its been great.
