theres a much faster way of doing that... you have a filter in your other tank? clean it in the new tank.. let the filter in that suck up all the muck and mess..

I only ever do that if I am desperate, and have had the odd problem with fungal infections in the fish. Whilst that will condition the filter and water it doesn't allow the other stuff in the tank to leak chemicals / bacteria into the water. The spares in this tank have been sat in a dark damp shed for a while.
Filter in big tank is way too silted up for that, I'd poison the smaller tank straight away. the little tank has 100% water from the big tank so that's a good start. Tomorrow I'll add a tiny amount of fish food to get the filter bacteria going.
