I had exactly the same problem. After a lot of checking of fuses , body computer connection etc I put it in the garage. They were equally baffled but got hold of another instrument panel to try out and everything worked. Unfortunately that meant about £290 for a new instrument cluster.
I found a couple of companies on the net that offer a repair service but not sure what you have to do to reset it and make sure the cmputers recognise it.
