something has snapped, most likely clutch cable or plastic quadrant. Normally a sign that the clutch itself (well, the release bearing) is on the way out and it's putting too much stress through components.Not always though, but that's usually the way of it.
Other possible parts that could have gone are the linkage bar or the pedal linkage, but these are pretty rare in comparison.
First thing's first, have a look at the cable and see if it's intact (pulling the cable with a pair of pliers ought to do it), second thing second, lift the clutch pedal by hand and feel the linkage attatched to it, then have a look at the gold bar that runs across from what that connects to and wiggle that, if that's not flapping about wildly then it's the quadrant, which is located in the passenger footwell behind the carpet, it connects the clutch cable to the linkage bar and is plastic. But as said the only real reason for these to go is a heavy clutch, which means new clutch time.
