Fiat as Police Cars

Fiat as Police Cars

Well, the Marea Weekend in the photo is used by Polizia Stradale, let's say, sort of "road police". They mainly use them for highway patrol.
In cities, "Squadra Volante" (Flying Squad - their logo being a black panther) uses the Marea sedan or, in few places, Series 3 BMWs. I am not sure but somewhere they may have Alfa 156 too. Given the logo, these cars are called "Pantere" (panthers) also because, at the beginning, they were black Alfa 1900s :)

In they past they only used Alfa Romeo cars, such as Giulia (in the 70s), Giulietta, 33 or 155. Just a couple of links:

The other cars (Punto, Stilo) are not State police cars, but local police ones, so it simply is not TRUE police... State police uses some 1st serie Punto, too, but as "service" car, not for serious work ;-)

Finally, don't know about your police, but our one is definately NOT gay: it is not the car which makes the policeman...

What cars do they use for high speed chases? The Marea Weekends?

Well, this really is not the time of high speed chases, it was during the 70s when there was a lot of terrorism here in Italy :( And at that time the Alfa Giulia was a great speed chaser!
However, they simply use the cars they have, nothing special, so for example the Marea, which is the 2.0 version, or Alfa 155s. Carabinieri do have lots of 156s.
Police do have a couple of Lamborghini Gallardo, that is true, but in theory they are to be used on highways for special purposes like the transport of organs. Surely they don't use them for chases... Unfortunately police lacks resources :(

In the past, in Rome, there was a famous policeman (marshall Armando Spatafora) who used the only Ferrari the police ever had. It is told that, when chasing, he used it even down the stairs! Here is a link for some photos:

yeh well i am an italian and can honestly say that although the police in italy may look like they would rather look good than enforce the law, they are tough "figli di putane" - (sorry i can speak italian but not write it!)

Mind you, i came out a club on monday night and was caught in the middle of a fight. (not involved tho just somehow ended up 3 feet away from it)

the police where there about 15 seconds after the fight started. the driver launched himself out the car and rugby tackled one guy and had him in hancuffs before the other cop (riding shotgun) even got there! It was amazing i didnt know the cops could be that brutal but it was impressive an re-assuring! i couldnt help but swear on witnessing it! so the brit cops are just as meaty!

But what i really wanna know is what modifications they make to those ford mondeos, they are definitely not factory standard and just painted yellow and blue! they sound different and go like a bat outta hell!

anyone have any ideas what they do to them?

Ricky
