As Martyn said we had a few problems today. First of all thank you to Mark and LewisP who were our mechanics. Mark especially worked very hard on the car whereas Lewis just dismantled things
They started by removing the rear brakes
This was the wear on the shoes
Yet another problem found - broken levers
We then discovered the brake pistons were ****ed and leaking brake fluid all over the place. A decision was made to put on the new handbrake cable as far as they could, put the drums back on and replace the wheels. We have now ordered new levers, pistons and shoes for next week
Old handbrake cable
New handbrake cable
While the rear of the car was in the end Martyn wire-brushed the rear trailing arms and the boot floor ready for coating and Lewis repaired the arch back into a more MOT-friendly state.
Moving on to the front of the car and once again we found problems. Old discs and pads were removed
Old discs
New shiny discs
When trying to put the brakes back together yet another problem arose. The caliper piston wasn't retracting true because it was surprise, surprise ****ed. This meant Mark looked even closer at the set-up and found even more problems. There was a split in the shock absorber mounting bracket and it had been ground down
At which point the idea of fitting the new discs on was abandoned and everything was put back on enough to move the car.
You may be wondering what the situation was with the exhaust - well it's still not on. We need to angle-grind a small section off of it so we can fit a sleeve.
Did we have any success at all today? Well sort of. Some of the pink has gone has gone as Martyn painted the tow hooks
So all in all not the best of days. We're now back in Bridge of Don eating well-earned pizza and planning our next move. The general conclusion is this was a trouble-shooting day and now we know we've found the problems we'll fix them next week. Anyone available to help?
